Why...?

Another wheelchair rant: So, for the past few days, I've noticed people working on the lawn in front of a church that's at the end of my street. A handful of workers were working on planting trees. Now, I would be fine with this... but... there's a bit of a problem. The workers park their trucks and cars on the sidewalk. There's a perfectually good patch of grass on the side of the road before you reach the street, so there's no excuse not to park the car there. Why don't I use it you ask? To put it simply, the way the cars and trucks are parked, I can't get to it and back on the sidewalk easily. And, grass and wheelchair tires don't mix. When will people learn, sidewalks aren't designed to park cars on. They are to be walking paths for people.

Sadly, people like that wont realize their mistake. Even after we point out their mistake. They often become defensive.

It's why I rarely say anything. The owner of the truck moved it, but I'll bet... if they're out again tomorrow, they'll be back to parking on the sidewalk. The church parking lot is practically empty during the day. Why are they being lazy and not parking there?

@kaylachan is there any shades on the sidewalk?

@Cheyee No, it's a normal sidewalk. There's grass on either side of it. I would just wheel into the grass, but the way the truck was parked I wouldn't have been able to on either side. I also don't fancy staying in the road any longer than I have to.

Oh I get the same here. I am tired of walking in the middle of the street so that cars and trucks can park up on the sidewalk. Ignorant.

I completely agree. The sidewalks are barely wide enough for my wheelchair.

I'm sorry to know this. Maybe they don't realized the effect of what they are doing to others.

I don't blame you for ranting. A good friend of mine was a wheelchair user and I often found this sort of thing when I was out with her. Able bodied people often don't appreciate what wheelchair users have to put up with.

I know what you mean. A lot of able-bodied people takefor granted what they have. They can easily walk around a car, tree or almost any obstacle. Not once wondering how a wheelchair couldn't possibly. I've been in a wheelchair since I was 18. Let me tell you, it's a whole new world.

People don’t think. I hope they moved the trucks so you could get by.

They did, when they saw me coming. I was trying not to bark at hem, though. Worst part, that particular sidewalk is on a hill. so guess how much fun it was for me to hold my wheels while I waited.

@kaylachan I’m glad they noticed you coming and moved everything without being barked at. I’m sure it was difficult holing your wheels on a hill.

No, they don't. People who walk or ride bikes, can swerve and walk around them. Wheelchairs on the other hand, not so easy. My chair is also manual.

Unfortunately some people are insensitive. They won't see it as their fault.

People are lazy, here they park cars that they know eventually get smashed because of crazy California driving. Its the laziest thing I have seen in my life, we literally just had three cars, not mine, neighbor cars get smashed and these people still fighting for the sidewalk spots, will not happen to me, until it does. I know not quite what you were saying buts its just an example of how lazy rude people are.

My Dad was in a wheelchair for years and one thing we learned is that unless you are a wheelchair user, you do not think of how it will affect them. It should be illegal to park up on the sidewalk or as we say here, pavement.
