How fearsome common cold has become..LOL

In India, it is winter now, as in many places elsewhere in the world. So my aunt has common cold. It comes with running nose, heaviness in head, gruff voice, a little bit of cough, and ...well you all know the rest. So aunt called, and her voice was not ok. I asked how are you doing. I have this cold, I have taken some traditional soup. PANIC. Whom did you meet in the past 5 to 7 days? (She is 86 - I do not have to trace 14 days as she would be sick within 7 days). She said nobody except you and your dad. Now GUILT. Are you having breathing issues? Can you smell coffee? Yes. Do you like the food you are eating? Yes. Are you having fever? No. Phew...then it is not COVID. As if I am a doctor...sigh. Nevertheless, it is scary now to even get common cold. Come to think of it, I hardly hear anybody coughing these days.

I agree that we panic now whenever someone complains of those symptoms. I’m not around anyone to hear if they cough or not.

LOL ..I used to hear some elderly cough from the neighboring building. But even that is not heard these days. People seem to have taken to smothering their cough.

I know we get in panic mode. I sneezed a few times this afternoon and my husband immediately asked "did you meet the neighbors?" NO, I have been at home all the time, I talk to the neighbors for a lot longer distance than 2 meters... well I petted the cats.

@vandana7 I stayed outside for a not very long time to shovel a bit of snow, but it's too cold, we do not need to move the car, I am waiting for the rain.

Every little symptom now we get so suspicious, right? I read through the differences between covid, cold, and flu - but it all seems fairly similar .

Extremely similar. My consolation today is, aunt has no breathing issues though her voice is gruff and she still has leaking nose and heaviness in head. But no breathing problem means she is safe. By this time, COVID would have done most of its damage.

@vandana7 I hope your aunt is much better today and did not have covid. I guess there are different levels of covid too - not everyone experiences the same symptoms.

Yap, having a cold or cough today is sort of committing a crime to scare people away??. Praying this will end soon and we will be back to our normal life then before this virus invaded our lands.

*sigh* If Auntie has only talked with you and dad, and neither of you have Covid, then Auntie is unlikely to have Covid, either. People do their best not to cough in public anymore. They cough as quietly as they can into their coat sleeves or the crook of their arm. Too many people automatically assume anyone coughing, no matter the real reason, are coughing because they have Covid! (It has become the fastest way to clear out a crowd of people! Uhm... not that I've ever considered coughing to make the line at a public restroom go away, or anything like that... )

@vandana7 Poor Auntie... *sigh* You can tell her I know she didn't do anything wrong... It was probably you and dad who gave her the cold, so she can yell at the two of you for risking her health! Bad vanny!

Sneezing alerts everybody. Funny thing. Initially, we used to find it funny that people are so scared. No longer that careless.

We in India may have different genetic composition. Despite our population, we have not suffered as acutely as you all have.

Luckily a runny nose and sore throat are not Covid symptoms. The irony of this year is that I have been more healthy than usual. I don't think I have had a cold since 2019!

Yeah. Lucky aunt has sore throat and runny nose. Gruff voice. Nevertheless, at 86, that makes her weak. Today dad visited her, she is ok. Hopefully, dad has not brought the cold bug home. 2019! Keep it up. :)

Everyone looks at my husband when he's in a store; and he coughs or blows his nose. It's just allergies; but everyone thinks he has the virus.

The first time somebody sneezed in the shop, everyone was alerted, people started moving away, and it was related as a joke. Now, that no longer sounds like a joke.

I was relieved...because I visited her. I did not know if the relief was on account of me not being the one who passed that infection or on account of me not infected. LOL.
