Occasionally the cards fall just right and the song fits the day it’s posted. I’ve already done that once this countdown, with a song with “seven” in the title coming in at #7. And, here on the weekend, is another song with “lonely” in the title!
#3: Lonely Weekends - Charlie Rich
There’s a legendary story that Sun Records owner/producer Sam Phillips once told Charlie Rich to go home and learn to play as “poorly” as Jerry Lee Lewis, and once he did Phillips could make him a star.
Charlie Rich sure got stuck in the wrong place at the wrong time when it came to the Sun Records roster. He was the “low man on the totem pole,” so to speak, with the likes of Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee making all the hits while he was relatively left behind.
But he eventually scored a bunch of hits in the 70s, which were popular in both country and pop. They just weren’t rockabilly.
This, however, is, and it’s one of my favorite Charlie Rich songs.
