The safest transportation in the world

Many say that airplanes are the safest means of transportation in the world compared to other types of transportation. But why is it that every time there is an airplane accident, it is always covered on a large scale by the media, making some people feel afraid to board an airplane? If asked to choose, will you travel long distances by air or by land?

Depends on the distance, and what would be better for my overall health. I have problems sitting for long periods of time. So if an hour or two on the plane would save me days of travel by land, well you can guess which I would chose.
The reason the media tend to make plane accidents a bigger deal, is because they are rare compared to car crashes train accidents and so on. So when something does happen, it's a real shock.

It may be better to go on our own vehicle unless far away we have full confidence on us

The reason they're covered with headline news is that it's a lot of people to die at one time. If there were car wrecks that killed 100 people they'd be covered the same way.
I don't fly. I have medical issues and ear problems. And, as the comedian Gallagher said, I like myself and my luggage to arrive to the same destination at the same time. (His joke was, "I walked into the airport and went to the counter. I told the lady, 'I'm going to Denver. Send this bag to Los Angeles and this bag to Cleveland.' She said, 'We can't do that!' I said, 'Why not? You did it last week!'" )

I would travel by airplane for a long distance like say Lake Charles to Panama City Panama to visit my relatives in Panama.
The media like to scare people by reporting the bad news of airplane crashes to attract ratings for their television shows since in their view good news will not attract the viewer.

Air for sure..............I think when accidents DO happen with airplanes, more people are injured at once, and therefore it garners more media attention. But car accidents kill people, 1,2,3, people at a time but ALL the time. Honestly I would rather be on a plane than in a car most of the time.

I think most of the people who get on the plane are rich people who are more concerned with time despite the high cost. Meanwhile, ordinary people choose road trips, even though it takes longer but is cheap.

In most cases when there is a plane accident more people are killed than by any other form of transportation therefore the wide coverage.
I flew planes all over the world and never felt in 'danger'!

I didn't think you were a pilot. Most commercial aircraft accidents are experienced by private, low-budget airlines. So it seems like choosing an experienced airline when flying is important.

I have flown so many times that I have lost count. I feel very safe in an airplane but always say a prayer and board right foot first. lol. More accidents happen with cars. Whe a plane crashes, it's more shocking because it carries so many passengers.

Because they happen so infrequently and the damage and loss of life so great it becomes a media event. I have flown on short duration flights, but really do not enjoy flying. Cramped seats, stuck in place for hours looking at clouds is not my idea of enjoyable travel. At least with trains and ships your closer to the ground and can view more scenery.

@Babale Yes, like many decisions one makes in life there always seem to be a tradeoff.

At least by plane, the time needed to reach the destination is shorter than other types of transportation. Indeed, only people who have a strong mentality dare to take an airplane, because sometimes they have to go through rain and lightning.

There are many more car accidents I have heard than airplane accidents. I think the fear comes from knowing you "could" survive a car accident but a plane crash is much more unlikely to survive of course. Because it is not very common for planes to crash the media makes it something they don't miss on telling about.

Maybe it's because until now I have never even felt on an airplane, so I thought so.
