While on our friend’s boat on the Swan River at Perth, Western Australia, this family of black swans came by to pay their respects. As you can see, the three cygnets are only half-grown. Their plumage will go black as they age. The black swan (Cygnus atratus) is between 110 and 142 cms (43 and 56 in) in length with a wingspan of 1.6 to 2 metres (5.2 to 6.6 ft). The long neck curves in an ‘S’ shape. Pairs stay together for life with both sharing incubation and raising of the cygnets. The black swan is a regional symbol of Western Australia and is fully protected in all states and territories although it is regarded as ‘of least concern’ on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Those big birds are beautiful. All swans have a bad temper and it's better not to get too close, particularly when they have cygnets. Several tourists are hurt by swans every year here in Switzerland.

@JudyEv The swan attack biting, pecking and shoving with their strong wings, better not to approach their nests.

Their wings are very strong if they decide to attack.

As beautiful as swans are, they seem to have a bad temper towards people getting too close to them. I've been chased by a few swans in my life.

@JudyEv I wonder how hard it is to reach out and grab them by the neck if they are attacking you? It would seem like it would be easy to do, although I'm sure it's not.

@moffittjc My Mum would always tell the story of a goose breaking a man's arm with its wings and a swan would be just as strong.

@JudyEv Very much so and you would more likely find them in places like Las Marismas other side of Spain in the South. They seem to be less nervious than the white ones not sure though perhaps they are the same really.

They are indeed. I love their 'curves', especially the way the neck curves.

We see them all over the place here. The five black dots in the photo are black swans. They are well north of the capital at Kalbarri.

Swans no matter what the colour are elegant and stately. Reminds me of the Russian Ballet Swan Lake

Looks beautiful. One in front not so black may be female one and the one behind with dark black texture may be male protecting the family staying back. It is said they have got peculiar quality of extracting milk from water.

@JudyEv Swans are residents of Manasarovar, a lake in Himalayas. They are normally white in colour. They are not seen in our area. They are always referred here with this quality of separating milk from water.

I haven't heard that before - about extracting milk from water. It sounds a bit far-fetched but nature is pretty marvellous with what can and can't happen.

what a treat to see those cygnets! don't reckon i knew they'd be a regional symbol there, but glad they're protected regardless.

I remember the movie Black Swan. So they are white when they are young? And turns black as they age?

Yes, that's true. And mostly there seems to be a parent bird each end and the cygnets in the middle.

They are beautiful, swans, both the white as well as the black are such a beauty to behold. There is a nearby city that has a small river with swans on it, and the return of the swans in the spring kicks off the season in that city. The people all follow the swans down to the river. It looks like such a fun time, we wanted to go last year, but could not due to the virus and will not be able to this year either. In a way it is a good thing, the residents of that city will be able to gather as a nice small group together, that is needed today.
