I love buying and trying new spices. My spice rack and cabinets runneth over! I even have ginger root in my refrigerator. Fresh ginger is so much better than the powdered kind. And who knew a garlic press could be used for more than just garlic! I even have a mortar and pestle That I use to gring up certain spices to release the flavor.
The spice you see pictured, hopefully, is Star Anise. This is one spice that I will definitely NOT be using for anything other than photography. I opened the bag to smell and WOAH! Black licorice! I can't think of a single dish that I wish to have that taste or smell in. Can you?
I haven't been here in ages, but I thought I would give it another go and see what happens...

Oh really? Does it taste like it smells? What else do you put in the rice with it? Ho much do you use?

@cindiowens you don't eat the spice, just add the spice. One or two is enough. I know some people actually eat it but I don't think I can. The taste is too strong.

I use a liquid form of ginger that I get at Vitacost.com, it's pretty much the only spice I actually use.

Its good to see you here today!
My spice cabinet fails in comparison to yours. I hsve no idea what you would use star anise in.

Have not seen you in a long time! I agree fresh ginger is way better. I have a friend who roasts and grinds her own spices for various curries (I am way too lazy to do that ). I have star anise in the pantry but have never used it. I originally bought it to for a pho broth recipe (a Vietnamese noodle soup), but haven't gotten around to it. Yah, I'm not big on the black licorice scent or taste . . . it should last me a million years .

Besides being great for stomach ulcers and yeast infections its full of healthy compounds.
Taste great in savory dishes, pork especially. But a little goes a long way.
