Can studying be as fun as playing a game?

Recently, I decided to start learning a new language. I use a few mobile apps to study. These apps are made like a game and you get points and rewards. There's also a rank system where you can advance among the rest of the users. At first, I thought that's a good idea because it's interactive and it kept me motivated. It's always good to see my progress. However, I am lately wondering whether I put more importance over the game stats rather than the studying portion. So, I decided to look for some old-fashioned books in addition to the app. What do you think? Do you enjoy learning foreign languages? Have you tried studying a language using mobile apps?
