The treadmill was invented in England in the 18th century for use in prisons to "exercise" inmates. Oscar Wilde was forced to treadmill 6-7 hours a day. Source: Harvard U professor On National Public Radio

As Oscar Wilde was sent to prison, I am not surprised he was forced to use the treadmill.

I know it was meant as punishment, but seems like it might have been good for the prisoners. I'll bet Oscar Wilde stayed fit.

We use it to punish ourselves. That's very true to it's invention.
