Never Assume

United States

I heard the call come over the scanner that a woman who was out walking her dog had found an unresponsive male in a driveway. My gut told me that it was someone I knew. About an hour had passed when I got a message from my brother to let me know it was our cousin. Of course Facebook was all a buzz with posts about the man they found. They questioned if he was homeless, if it was drug related, and wanted to know the identity of this poor man and how he died. The banter went on for hours until I snapped like a dry twig. I wrote that you should assume that a person died of a drug overdose, was homeless, or post words that will cause further grief to anyone. I went on further to say that the only people that truly needed to know what caused a person’s death was that person’s family. I also added that the man who passed was family. He served his country honorably. Never assume the cause. People do pass of natural causes. Reach out to the family and try to comfort them in their grief.

Such a personal thing when you lose someone. I stay off of social media. It is absurd. Sorry for your loss.

The post came up in my newsfeed because one of my relatives was following the post. She was closest to our cousin. I knew she couldn’t respond because it was too painful for her.

Social media is nothing more than a worldwide gossip column. The comments and remarks are cruel and cutting.

Most people are basically curious, they hunger for facts. Yet, when someone passes away, regardless of how it happened, the family is suffering a great loss. What I don't understand, 'Oh, that person was old, it was time for them to pass away.' So this is a good thing, a loss that didn't matter?

I was asked if I was close to my cousin. I told her that even if I don’t see someone for years, I will always be close to them. Family is family.

@ElusiveButterfly I haven't seen some of my relatives for years. This doesn't change the family love we share!

So sorry about your cousin. It's sad that humans are curious by nature and can be so insensitive. Social media gives them a tool to let the manners go out the door.

I’m sorry for your loss. I’m equally sorry that you have to endure such stupidity at a sad time.

Its a shame that people are so quick to assume the worst and then to spread it on that terrible site like that. Words like that hurt. I am sorry for your loss.
