Will try to fix the leaking fridge on my own

I looked up online why the fridge can be leaking and how to fix the issue. There are a few things that can be causing the leak and a fix for them. I think I will try to do the fix on my own, with hubby helping of course. If that doesn't work then I will try to find a professional to come and fix it. I like the idea of first trying to fix it on my own before hiring help. Hope that will be a good thing and the suggested fixes will stop the leaking from happening.

I like the idea of learning how to fix an item since asking for professional help can be costly.

Good luck, this is what I always try first, why to spend money if I can fix it?

If a refrigerator needs to be defrosted, it will start to leak water. Ours did this once, so we defrosted it. I mopped up any excess water, put all our foods back inside, then plugged it back in.

Doesn't seem like it needs to be defrosted.

@kobesbuddy Oh. Did not know that. Inside the freezer I do not see any ice or water.

@lovebuglena The ice could be formed inside the walls of your refrigerator. It's not visible.

The solution for the time being was to turn off the water supply to the fridge. We do not use the ice maker or drink water from the fridge, as the water filter is old, so that's ok. However, time to update to a new fridge as per my mom. I'd love to get one before the Presidents Day sale is over but hard to find a fridge that fits under the darn kitchen cabinet. If we remove the cabinet then no issues but then we lose storage space. I managed to find one fridge that fits but width is narrower than we want.

@LindaOHio I want a side-by-side fridge. GE preferably. Maybe Samsung. Those don't have our height. We will have to either take off the cabinet or just remove the cabinet doors to fit it. We have nowhere else to put it but where the current one is. I did find a French doors Samsung in our height, which I didn't really want but that one was too narrow anyway.

@lovebuglena We made the fridge area into a big cabinet and now have the fridge out on the floor. The new fridges are much too large to fit into the space that we had. Good luck finding one to fit.

Saves a ton of money and hassle if you can figure it out on your own and fix it. I hope it works out and you don't have to bring in a professional.

After finally moving the fridge yesterday to look behind it, which should have been done days ago, I noticed water leaking from the water filter and the copper tubing. My dad told me to go to the bathroom and turn off the water supply to the fridge and that stopped the leaking. Seems like that is the only issue because so far I see no water anywhere. Wish I had done that as soon as we saw water around the fridge. Would've saved us the trouble of constantly cleaning up the water from the floor. And it wouldn't have damaged the strip on the bottom of the kitchen cabinet. It kinda came off on one side. I hope the water did no other damage anywhere.

@porwest Leak was coming from the water filter and the copper tubing next to it. Since the water supply was turned off no more leak. However, my mom wants to replace the fridge. It is from the 90s. The freezer door has to be lifted to close it. The fridge door doesn't always close all the way. Time for an upgrade. And she wants to do it now while there is a Presidents Day sale. But she is not participating in the choosing. She said I pick and buy and she will reimburse. She said I gotta spend under $2k. I am looking for side-by-side fridge. GE preferably but perhaps Samsung is an option. Can't find any that fit under our kitchen cabinet. The darn cabinet has to be removed for fridge to fit, which I don't want to do but no choice. Also, if I get the fridge now (using Home Depot) fridge won't be available till March, end of April or beginning of May.

@lovebuglena Now you just have to find the source of the leak.

If all we had to do in the end to stop the leaking was turn off the water supply I am glad we didn't try to hire a professional.

Gonna be hard choosing one. I want GE. Can't really find any that fits under the upper kitchen cabinet with the right width. But if we remove the cabinet and I choose any height there are many options and hard to figure out which to go with. Some are pretty similar. It was much easier choosing the dryer.
