Just Cancel The Debt Already (MyLot Exclusive #355)

I saw another article today about how unfair it will be if student loans are canceled. How it would be insulting, a slap in the face, even, to the people who have paid their loans. As usual, these arguments strike me as ridiculous. It's sort of like the police saying, "Yeah, we know where the serial killer is but we aren't going to arrest him because if we spare future victims, it will be unfair to those he already killed." Or a soldier in World War II saying, "Sarge, if we liberate this concentration camp, sure, it will help the prisoners who are still alive. But what about the ones who died? It'd be very unfair to them." But, as a Compassionate Liberal and someone who paid off all his student loans almost 30 years ago, I want to help my logically challenged Conservative friends. To that end, I will be accepting payments from any Republicans who think I'm being unfairly treated. Whether President Biden manages to cancel student loans or not. That's how big-hearted I am! I think the total I paid was around $20,000 but you can send me any amount you wish. I know that most Republicans are drug-addicted welfare-queens that will never have $20,000 at one time but that's OK. In fact, if all 74 million of you who voted for Trump just send me one or two dollars a month for the next 30 years, I'll be perfectly happy. And you won't have to worry about unfairness anymore! You're Welcome! Student-loan forgiveness isn’t equitable | Letters
A letter-writer rebuts a recent column by Valencia College's president and says that forgiving current students' debt would place an unfair burden on taxpayers.

I can see both sides of the coin here. I can see why some people would consider this move to be a slap in the face. Because there are those who worked hard to pay off their loans and got out of debt. And, then you have those who get into debt, because they need money, but aren't working and have no other means to finish school. By forgiving the student debts, that means those who issued those loans won't be getting that money back. Yeah, I would be upset too if I didn't get my money back if I loaned it to someone. And, it's usually the taxpayers that dish out the money for the loans.... because that's just one of the many things our tax dollars go for. But, then there's the other side. Forgive the debts, ease the stress on those who can't pay back the loans because hey... you just wasted your time going to school and can't even get into the career you went to school for. Yep. No one wins.

In this case, everyone wins. The no-one wins are when we bail out banks and other corporations who made stupid decisions and on top of that, they don't pay taxes. We do need to insure that there are jobs for everyone but that is a completely separate issue.

@xander6464 Yes, I know. There's just way to many people and far few jobs. Which, yes, Is its own issue.

I don't like it. In Croatia we have something similar with bills. Some people debts from bills are written off and when I hear that I think what an idiot I am. Why did I pay my? I should collect debt, transfer car to my friend and show in papers I don't have anything. Maybe my bills would be written off.

Debt is written off all the time everywhere but that's not really the point here. Here, we are just talking about educational loans.

@mrki444 Not when you take into consideration how much education returns to society.

I like your analogies. I think that it is horrible that people feel that if they have suffered, others should suffer too. It's a really weird form of envy. I don't understand it. We should always improve the world as time goes on. If something becomes outdated, we should throw it out and replace it with something better. That's how life works. I don't understand the comment about Republicans though, but I also think that political parties get away of political progress, creating teams to root for and rivals to project on. If you truly are so compassionate and correct, then you don't really need to resort to anger in such a way. It doesn't actually get people to rethink their position or anything- more-so cements it, I would think.

The comment about Republicans is because they are trying t stop student loan forgiveness. I know I'm not going to change their minds but I can influence the undecided by pointing out how horrible they are.

It's not about the ones who already paid their loans. It's about all of the hard working Americans who pay taxes, who do not have college degrees, who will have to pay for the college they did not attend. YOU (them) decided to go to college. So pay for it. What's next? Free cars? Free houses? I mean, it was a choice to go to college, and it costs money. Why NOT have to pay for it?

This is why Trump loves the uneducated. They can also be very easily convinced that VooDoo Economics works, abortion is murder and rich white men have your best interests at heart. And many others.
