This Makes Me Wonder ... How Close did Real Life ever get to "Swashbuckling"?

This morning, I watched The Princess Bride on hulu. Besides all the messed-up ideas I got from that movie (ideas that most people dismiss as "fiction," but that stuck with me in the same area of my brain as 'miracles' (one of which I am )), I was especially inspired by the 'Inigo vs. Man-in-Black (Westley)"-scene (partly because it's one that Jill Bearup calls "Perfection"). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0rkUbrPo3k It made me wonder, 'Did sword-fighting like that ever happen in real life? or is stage swashbuckling just "a form of dance"?'

A lot of things have grains of truth to them. Given the styles are copied over various forms of media, it's possible that there's some real-life truth behind it. But, yes often times I question reality and fiction.
