Making things is so satisfying!

I hate to throw away anything potentially useful - and of course depending on how you think about it, that could include almost anything! As I said in an earlier post, during lockdown I have been wearing all my oldest, holiest clothes. And plenty of them since the weather has taken a particularly wintry turn. I don’t know what I do exactly, but I seem to be particularly hard on my socks. Most of the warmest ones soon seem to develop humungous holes in the heels. Then I wear a second pair on top but it can be difficult to arrange so that the holes do not correspond! In the end I had to admit that several of my old pairs really were past it, even for lockdown use. So then I looked online for uses for old socks. I found some ideas but many of them needed socks that were intact - and obviously the best use for those is just to put them on your feet! But in the end I did find some rather inventive and cute suggestions. This morning the girls and I had a go at the simplest of them - and look what we made! Doughnuts for play tea-parties - or you could use as a pin cushion. They are so easy and so much fun to make. I only had one pair of worn out brown socks - now I think I am actually going to have to ask around for more because these are so pleasing! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2021.

This is a pretty craft. To use old socks search on YouTube "making gnomes with all socks". I am having fun making them.

Thanks - and thanks for the suggestion. Old socks are obviously an underused resource! We just made a snowman!

That’s so cute. What are the pink and white sprinkles?

They are beads that we sewed on. Of course if you wanted to make a toy for a younger child you could be safe and just do big stitches with coloured yarn.

@sol_cee It needed something to make the bottom heavier so it would stand up, so we used bulghar wheat (because we have a lot and the girls are not keen on eating it!) - rice would be better because it's white, or you could use those plastic beads that fill bean-bags. Then after that we stuffed the rest with toy stuffing because I already have a big bag of that, but yes you could use other socks or nylon tights too. I found the instructions here
Ok, this is definitely my favorite craft I've made all season. First, because they're super easy to make, and second, because they're ADORABLE. I've been meaning to make some kind of snowman craft for a while, but unfortunately I couldn't figure out a good

Ironic isn't it? I guess that is the catch when you look for new uses for old stuff!

From the thumb nail I thought it was an edible one, only slightly disappointed. Think my cat would like to sleep on that

It's not big enough for a cat, it's only the size of an edible doughnut.

Mine always wear out at the heels too but I don't wear slippers in the house, just the socks. So it's not surprising that I wear them out. I'm not creative like you so they just go in the bin. I remember when we used to darn them, do you? Can't be bothered now as new ones aren't expensive.

I have tried darning them, but then the bit right next to the darn goes into a hole practically straight away and I end up with a sort of island of darns!

That looks very nice... almost good enough to eat. The only things I do with worn out socks is use them as dust rags.

That was one knee-length sock. All you have to do for the basic doughnut is cut off the toe and then roll up all the rest. Then we decorated with felt and some beads.

Congratulations, a brill idea! When you ask around, you'll be inundated by socks with holes. You could have added what the light blue thingy with the glittery things is which is lying on your 'doughnut'.

Sorry, it's felt for the icing with beads for 'sprinkles'. You could also decorate with embroidery I'm sure if you wanted to make them suitable for babies.
