Comfortably Dumb: Gladly Not Knowing the Scarcity of Electricity

In the modern world, we have a limitless amount of electric energy ... as long as we keep the bills paid and don't damage the equipment we use it with. (You know, just 'plug it in & turn it on.')
And that's all we have to know.
But 'we who think too much' know more---that the electricity is "sent" to us (through the wires) from 'the electric-company' who "creates" it with machines of theirs (powered by ... coal? I think, maybe by natural gas or oil or gasoline or diesel fuel---maybe ... different fuels in different places).
Which is why your electric-bill is lower if you don't use your electrical equipment as much ... or maybe they charge you a flat rate (same amount no matter how much you use), I dunno---it's been so long since I looked at an electric-bill ...
Ignorance is bliss!... but please do fill me in on anything you know about the process.

Rates here are high, winter monthly bills reaches $700-$800 a month. It’s my highest bill, in summer, even tho our season is short it will decline to about $200. Newfoundland has many generating stations, the one that supplies our area is a thermal generator with three turbines. It can generate up to 40% of the island’s electricity and burns 18,000 barrels of oil a day.
There a ongoing project called “Muskrat” Falls, a natural 50+ foot waterfall, hoping to generate a cleaner energy. But it’s been more than difficult to complete this project and will probably result in much higher bills than now.
I only pay attention to the electricity bill because we are always trying to conserve and save.

Have you looked at those little wind-electricity generators? It's been a while since I looked at them, but I remember them saying that--if you bought a generator (or two or a dozen-or-so) and it was windy enough and you were conservative about your energy use--you could have the energy-company PAYING YOU!
(The article has you do it with solar-generators)
