What Job(s) lasted the least amount of time before you quit / were fired?

My very first job was at seventeen. I worked as a waitress for four days before I decided that it was just too much stress for me. It was my senior year of high school. Why was it stressful? I had two waitresses training me and neither of them could agree on anything. I had to let them see my order tickets before I'd put them in etc, and if I wrote the ticket out the way the one waitress wanted, the other one would get angry. The next shortest job was as a cleaner. I could have gotten that job back, but I didn't for the same / similar reason. The woman I was working with lied about my work ethic, and it became clear that she was lying. The owner said I could have the job back, but I decided I wasn't going to work for a place where I wasn't allowed to give my side of the story. Conversationally, my longest job lasted 6.5 years. What's the shortest job you've had?

I was fired from Arby's after two weeks for being "too shy".

I knew someone who tired working for an arby's. You have to be able to work really fast there now too. Yeah, I've always been the "too shy" type too, I don't like talking / get introspective so I'm not good for customer facing jobs.

@AngelisaQT Ah! Yeah I get that. The last place I worked for, lots of my coworkers would do that. When I started working as a stock clerk it wasn't as bad, but when people would just chat it was more noticeable because products weren't getting stock. Had to pick up their slack.

@ScribbledAdNauseum They wanted me to go out with them on the weekends. Would sit there and talk in the back about what they were going to do and such instead of working. I was there to work, not make friends... I guess that is where I went wrong.

My shortest job was at seventeen, and I was a telemarketer for two weeks. I got so tired of being cussed out. I was trying to help pay for college, but the verbal abuse got to me.

I commend those who can tolerate those jobs. I am not one of them. My cousin did that for awhile and it was tough on her.

I think my shortest was for like 3 days and that was for orientation in a factory job. It was so hot in there and you had to wear safety glasses. I sweat like crazy as it is and I could not see what I was doing because my glasses kept fogging up. No one taught me anything either so I felt like I could not do the job after orientation days were done. I could not even hear what they said if they did try to teach me anyway because it was so loud in there. I explained my situation to the higher ups but they didn't get it. I could not try to work those industrial machines with no knowledge so when lunch came around, I turned my badge in and didn't come back.

I don't blame you for that. It sounds like they dropped the ball. How could they expect anyone to work without knowing how the machinery worked? I also can't stand being too hot, factory work would not be for me.

I worked in a Pink Panther suit for a store opening. One day before I left that place. The suit was hot and I couldn't breathe. Longest job, 14 years.

Yeah I also imagine it would be itchy. That reminds me, I tried out for a job at Liberty Tax as a sign flipper. That lasted 30 minutes before I realized I wasn't going to be able to do it. Probably why they make the person stand out and try for a little while before they go through paperwork.

1 day. I was trained to work at a party center; but for the days during the week I had nothing to do. I answered a couple of calls and paid a couple of bills. Then I was to work the weekend running the party center. I quit after one day. It wasn't for me.

@LindaOHio So true. I used to talk to a man who worked as a security person at night. He was allowed to watch what he wanted and talk to who he wanted provided he did routine monitoring / walking checks. Still that sounds so boring to me.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Doing nothing all day just makes the days drag on endlessly and gives you no personal satisfaction. Running the party center on the weekends would have been fun; but then 7 days a week you would be working....not fun.

I'm not sure. I've not had many jobs that lasted more than a matter of weeks to a few months. Not counting ones where I went to a training day and wasn't called back, it was probably a door to door sales job selling windows. I sold precisely nothing. I went out, if I recall, twice maybe three times (it was a long time ago, one of my first jobs and I was at college at the time). There were various reasons it didn't last - partly because I had to work in an area I couldn't walk/catch a bus so had to rely on someone picking me up. I remember waiting for that person who never turned up. I then had to spend some time getting what I was owed - the boss eventually turning up with cash after saying he didn't want people like me on his team - I can only assume he meant people who expected to get paid and not get let down by other members of the team.

I've always heard door to door sales jobs are pretty stressful and most are on commission so it's surprising he paid you at all. Most college kids now have the opportunity to make good money with the delivery service apps. Hardly seems fair that it's so much easier now.

I worked for York Steakhouse when I was a teen. I worked I think maybe one Friday night shift and never again. It about killed me. I was working there on the line in a cafeteria sort of place, and it was extremely busy. Nope, not for me. My sister also worked there and she stayed on for at least a year. Not for me!!!

@snowy22315 I one had a customer flat out ask me why I was irritated (because I couldn't easily cover that) and I said "We closed 45 minutes ago ma'am." We weren't allowed to tell them to leave. The woman looked horrified and said "I thought you closed at 10!" and I said "We've recently changed the hours for Monday - Thurs." I got a good tip that night.

The summer after graduating high school, I had a few part time gigs that just didn't work out (I quit all of them ). The shortest would be working for Miller's Outpost in the mall . . . where they sold Levi's clothing. Maybe it was 2 weeks? I didn't know what I was doing . . . I was supposed to help customers, but I had no training for any of it . . . I couldn't answer customers questions . It was just embarrassing so I just quit .

@ScribbledAdNauseum I think that was the only time I tried to work in the mall. Back then I knew nothing about how to wash clothing properly, or sizing people for clothes . . . can't sell clothing with that lack of knowledge .

That does sound really embarrassing. I never understood how my friends could work in the mall. I always found it too loud and not enough time for a break.

I was once a banquet server too. I worked for two hotels and a convention center. We'd work 10-12 hour days for two or three weeks and then have one or two weeks off because there weren't any events happening. It paid well but it got to me.

I really can't say that I blame you for that. I went through orientation with walmart once and knew I'd hate it. I never got a call back. I've had family and friends who worked there and hate it. My area's walmarts try to get people to quit as soon as possible so they don't have to pay benefits.

@Tampa_girl7 I worked at Kmart once too and yeah, it was not fun at all. One thing I hated was that the cashiers had to face / condition the aisles around them while the customer service people counted our tills.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I had just gotten married and it was the graveyard shift. I can’t drive and it was across the county line. No buses crossed the line and cabs charged extra to cross the county line. It was too far to walk. When I was a teenager I worked at k-mart a month and didn’t care for it. I’m sure Walmart would have been similar.

First real job in an office, I was the secretary for 6 months. I realized at 18 years old, there was something wrong with what was done. The business wasn't on the level, so I quit. Not even a year later, the owner was found out and prosecuted. He spent time in Leavenworth Prison for check kiting and other crimes. Bodies were exhumed from a ranch, that he co-owned in Arizona.

@ScribbledAdNauseum He was a very kind family oriented man, I thoroughly trusted! His mother worked in the office, Kay was an evil witch. Together they were doing manipulative, dishonest things out of this office (A collection bureau). I realized people were being cheated out of money. So, I quit my job and Kay was so angry with me! She wanted to rip me a new butt, because I figured out what was going on. It's a miracle, they didn't do me in, also

The shortest job I had was working in the kitchen in the German barracks. I was only 7 months there. I quit because I had no more appetite to eat and I weight only 39 Kilos because of that. I couldn’t stand the smell of the French fries, steaks and everything every day. I swore not to work in the kitchen anymore cooking those food that I don’t like much. After my recovery, I worked in a cafeteria and only had to deal with making cakes.

@thelme55 I understand how the scent would be overwhelming. Working a s stock clerk, I had to sometimes stock the shelves in the cleaning aisle. It was hard to do as my chest would constrict from all the chemical smells. I can not go into a cleaning aisle even now. I must have family get these items for me.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yes, I was so slim at that time. That’s right. The scent of all the fried food has destroyed my appetite that I decided to quit the job as I was already trembling in the kitchen but waited for the time we closed the canteen. My boss brought me home. I was never fired in my jobs but they were sad when I quit.

Both of those jobs do sound stressful! Especially with the waitress trainers. My shortest job was as a babysitter - it lasted 2 days. I wanted to quit after day 1 though! However, the mom got fired, which means I did too. My longest was around 2 years I think.

I've never had a proper 'job'. They were work placements on the YTS. There was this place called R A James and they put transfers on jugs and ashtrays and stuff for pubs and places. I hated it! I got told I was too slow and that I should speed up. Then I was told I was leaving bubbles in the transfers and I should make sure all the bubbles were out! Well I couldn't do both, if I wanted to get all the bubbles out it would make me slower than they wanted. If I went fast like they wanted, I didn't have enough time to get all the bubbles out! After a while I got fed up of it and I told my tutor on the YTS that I wanted to leave the work placement. When he asked why, I told him. It was very frustrating!
