I went to prison today....

Perth, Australia

Last week in class, my friend and I were talking about things we could do for fun together outside of class. We've only all had one outing together and that was for my friend's birthday get together. There is Bellah, Cheri and Jessica. Bellah is the one I was talking to about doing something. We decided on The Fremantle Prison. I'm just going to copy what Wikipedia says sorry, as I suck at explaining. "Fremantle Prison, sometimes referred to as Fremantle Gaol or Fremantle Jail, is a former Australian prison and World Heritage Site in Fremantle, Western Australia. The six-hectare site includes the prison cellblocks, gatehouse, perimeter walls, cottages, and tunnels." I've been there at least 3-4 times now but under a different tour. I was happy to be going again with my new friends. Jessica couldn't come though. So Bellah, Cheri and myself did a tour called "True Crime." It was interesting and heard some good stories but we were a tad bummed out as we were kinda expecting more. More stories and more access to buildings. We have already decided to come back together to do more tours (though some Bellah may be a bit too afraid for as Cheri and I want the night tours - we will work something out.) Many years ago, I took some photos inside the cell block area and I caught a lot of orbs (some may say it was dust partials and that's fine, for me I saw it differently) but more so at the gallows. I was hoping to find more curious things like this again during this tour so I took a lot of photos but didn't find anything. It was good to get out as I rarely do. It also makes me feel like these new friendships are more secure. I cannot wait to go out again with them. I'd love to know what type of tours you've been on if you feel like sharing. Regarding my post before this one, I will get to that as soon as possible. It was a difficult one so just going to chill elsewhere around MyLot and come to that one later on. ****photo is mine of the front of The Fremantle Prison****

I would love a tour like that! My friends and I, many years ago, picked through some old house that were demolished years later. There's a road in another county that had be renamed because of the "woman on the bridge" legend. It was renamed to deter seekers from trying to re-enact the legend. Uhm, the last tour I can think of was for The Andy Griffith Show... I live about an hour away from where Andy Griffith was born.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I don't think I've heard about "woman on the bridge" before. I'm very intrigued! Is that the one who threw her baby over the bridge by any chance or am I way off? Awesome! That would have been very interesting!

@ScribbledAdNauseum No worries, either way it's very interesting and I love learning about these stories. Stories like that always gives me chills but also fascinates me. I'd so love to go ghost hunting. But like a real, good, having all the right equipment type of ghost hunting.

@VivaLaDani13 Oh, me too! I'd love to stay over night in a place and just be able to feel and see and hear some of the things I see on ghost shows. I know there's restless spirits in lots of different places.

I toured a de-commissioned prison in Tennessee last year (called Brushy Mountain). We have a lot of them in the United States, and many of them are tourist spots and places for things like ghost hunting tours. The one I went to last year didn’t have that (due to covid, no doubt), and the tour was self-guided. There were plenty of signs that explained things, especially around the most infamous prisoner’s cell: James Earl Ray, the man who assassinated Rev. Martin Luther King.

@FourWalls That all sounds so interesting and something I'd do if I was over there. I've only been on one Ghost Tour. The prison tours I've done spoke about apparent ghost sightings but it wasn't specifically about ghosts / spirits etc. But this other one I did took place in a huge house somewhere and spoke all about ghosts that were seen. It was interesting. Can't confirm or deny whether it was all true though.

@VivaLaDani13 I only toured small prisons in Ghost Towns in the United States, never a big one. I like to look for haunted places, I am sure that we can feel "presences" in some places.

@VivaLaDani13 It is a bit of obsession for me too. I have no real proof that those I loved and passed away are around.

@LadyDuck If you're ever here in Australia, I would take you. There are more tours for this prison that I'd love to do. It's truly interesting and amazing being around or being in something that is old and to learn about what happened there. I did take a lot of photos but it was just to look for any ghosts / spirits so nothing really worth sharing I don't think. I do have one I MIGHT talk about but I just cannot see what everyone is talking about. I see something but not what everyone is saying it is.

That's a very beautiful looking prison. I wonder why they went through so much trouble to make it look so ornate just to hold a bunch of prisoners? I love doing ghost tours. I actually did one in a small town jail many years back, it was pretty cool although I did not see anything. I've also done ghost tours in lighthouses, museums, former churches and more. I always love doing ghost tours, although many of them are clearly touristy more than anything else.

@VivaLaDani13 I've never had any photos turn out with something weird in them. I wish I could have seen the photo from your room with the thing that was scaring you.

@moffittjc I wish I could answer that for you though keep in mind I took that photo a few days ago whereas how it looked way back then may have been so different. Actually that is something I've never done - looked up old photos of it! I will have to. Oh that all sounds so awesome! I've only really ever done one. It was good but can't say whether the stories were all true though. I have captured some weird things (maybe only 4 photos in total in various places) one in my room which I don't understand. I deleted it though as it was scaring me.

@moffittjc I actually regret deleting it. I showed my dad back then. I can tell you what it looked like at least. So I was laying in my bed, my TV was on but I put the colours and brightness down as sometimes I don't like the brightness so my room was dark but not completely dark. Sometimes, I take photos around my house and honestly, it's sometimes after I speak to my mum and / or uncle begging them to show themselves to me. And sometimes any spirit. Anyway this night, I didn't ask I was just taking photos. I took a photo of my bedroom door, (closed door) and when I looked at the photo, I quickly sat up on bed alarmed. It looked like a bald man standing there. The best I can describe his silhouette, you know that main character from Minions? Steve Carell's character. Reminded me of that. The clothes, the head, the pointed nose. So I took more photos of that exact spot less than 5 minutes later. Nothing. Nothing with that shape came back into my photos. I showed my dad, I asked him first what he thought it looked like so I didn't give him any ideas and he said the same thing. I deleted it because I wanted to stop trying to analyse it and decode it. I've had an issue before with....something before but that was years ago. I was worried about looking at that photo further and being scared. But now I wish I kept it to play around with the colours and lightning etc on my laptop to see that silhouette some more.

@DocAndersen Oh I would so love to go on a tour of Alcatraz! Could you please explain to me what the datecenter tour was? I'm guessing computer stuff?

@Treborika Good question! The reason is because this prison is now a tourist attraction. It closed in 1991 I believe. There are so many different tours there that explain the famous inmates. Why they were there and how long they were there and if they got executed there. There are ghost tours there as well. It's all very interesting. It's full of history.

@VivaLaDani13 If I may ask you what derived you to visit a prison over other beautiful and fantastic places that you can visit and which is full of fun?

The closest I've ever been to prison (aside from one night in 'the drunk tank,' which was kind of an office-building where I was held after I got drunk enough to ask cops for a ride home) was a church I used to go to, which has/is-practically-BUILT-ON an inmate-program (where they bus-in groups of convicts for the church-service).

@VivaLaDani13 It was just 'a night' (and then only from about 3 in the morning to about 10 that morning).

@MarshaMusselman Castles would be amazing! I've always wanted to go to Scotland and Ireland to see all the castles.

This is one place we haven't visited yet. I'd love to the do the tunnels but I'm not sure if that's the prison or just Fremantle. That's great that you've made new friends. We need some new friends. Two of our closest friends have moved away and we don't see them so often.

@VivaLaDani13 Thanks for the link. I'm sure it would be easy to feel claustrophobic in the tunnels. We do have other friends but these were closer to us than some others.

@JudyEv I'd love to do the tunnels too but I fear I may feel claustrophobic. I'm sorry about your two friends moving away! I do hope more friends are on the cards for you as it's really nice to have more. Though, quality over quantity for sure! If interested, here is a link from the Fremantle Prison website about the tunnels tour:

At first I thought you were going to a real prison, so I understood the essence while reading. I'm not sure she'd like a trip to jail.

that sounds so cool! i've never been to prison before. my class should've had practice in prison last semester, but we didn't because of corona. maybe this semester we can go there, i really want to see what it's like. instead of going there, we were presented some cases and for some we had to make the treatment. it was cool, but would be better in real life.
