I have to quit smoking before they will do my surgery. I don't have to quit just yet, but I decided to go ahead and try. So, I am chewing nicotine gum right now.
I've been smoking for 14 years so it's going to be difficult. I know it's something that has to be done if I want the surgery though, so I am going to try my very best.
Hopefully if I can quit before the surgery I can stay quit afterwards too. 
It's a nasty habit!

My sister had to go on welbutrin twice before she kicked the habit.

@AngelisaQT I wish you the best of luck with it. Would trying to create the habit of sucking on a lozenge, or mint or butterscotch candy help at all? I mean, whenever you feel the need to smoke, would doing one of those help anything?

@ScribbledAdNauseum Well the gum seems to be helping. I am also going to try sucking on a straw while chewing the gum.

I've been on Wellbutrin and it didn't help. I've even tried Chantix but still couldn't quit. This is going to be hard but I am just going to have to chew my gum and distract myself when I feel like I want one.

You can do it it is going to take some time. I hope once you have the surgery you can stay not smoking

@AngelisaQT My mom quit a few times only issue she had was weight gain. She went back and then lost the weight but she had to quit again for health reasons

@Tina30219 Weight gain would be horrible. The surgery I have to quit for is weight loss surgery.

It is not a habit. It is an addiction. It is hard to quit but it can be done. I quit after having smoked for 50 years.
