Harry and Solomon have new coats

We took our new pet sheep, Harry and Solomon, to be shorn today. They were a handful for the shearer so they are big strong sheep. They kicked and threw themselves around quite a bit but now they are minus their hot fleeces. Because they wriggle and squirmed so much, the shearer found it hard to do a neat job on them. We were surprised to find Harry has black and white patches while Solomon has quite wrinkly skin. We had a bit of trouble heaving them onto the trailer, even though we had a nice ramp for them. However, once they were shorn they were keen to get onto the trailer and be taken home. They’re not as stupid as they sometimes appear. After we brought them home, we went back into town to vote. Voting is compulsory in our country. We also bought Harry a nice new red dog-collar. Solomon’s collar is a noseband from a horse’s bridle.

They are roughly shorn too as they made it so difficult for the shearer.

@vandana7 If they did feel all those things, they hid it very well.

@myklj999 Thanks. I was thinking they would be penalized but don’t know the extent.

I hope they gave you a discount because of that. They do sell the fleece don't they?

@rebelann Only some fleeces are worth a lot of money. These are crossbreds so their wool isn't worth much at all.

No, I left the fleeces with the shearer. They are really of no use to me.

I have to think that they did not like so much to sit at the "barber shop" for their fur trimming. I have never seen a sheep with wrinkly skin, I am sure that in a few days the new fur will cover the wrinkles.

@LadyDuck We are having beautiful warm days at the moment so the sheep won't miss their wool just yet.

Solomon is going to be jealous while Harry tells him you like him the best. I never thought about the color of their skin under the wool. That's interesting. They look different. I wonder if they stand at the watering trough and admire their new look?

Some time back, two pets I had were afraid of each other when they were first shorn. They were trying to keep away from the other one.

Oh, you are a shepherdess. I once was a goatheredess to a billy, two nannies, and four kids. It was fun tending the goat. Sheep could be different because of the grooming you narrated in the post. But I like Harry and Solomon.

Once a year most sheep need to be shorn. There are a couple of breeds where the sheep shed their fleeces and don't have to be shorn.

@JudyEv Wow! An annual grooming this shorn thing is. Must be an exciting event the sheep look forward to. The fur could be too hot for them. Or maybe not. Could be protection from the cold. Shows I know nothing about sheep, don't I? Do you turn the coat of sheep into wool?

@eileenleyva The sheep should have been short about October/November then they would have less wool over summer. But Harry and Solomon will grow enough wool for them to be warm when winter arrives. It is a lot of work to spin the wool so I won't be doing that.

What do you do with sheep? And thanks for letting me know there is a word "shorn". I thought it would be shearing or sheared and such variations.

@vandana7 I think mostly they're looking for food but they do enjoy a scratch or a rub. They come running every time we go down there so it's easy to think they like us - but I suspect they like the bread/Weetbix more.

These are just pets - like cats and dogs. We use 'shorn' here but I think 'shearing' and 'sheared' are equally acceptable.

They are sheep. They were in the area where the big fires were and the owners could no longer keep them. Some people have cats or dogs; we have sheep.

Sooooo cute. Who kept the wool? I can't believe that you are fined if you don't vote in your country. Everyone should vote; but it should be a free choice.

@JudyEv It's a free choice in the US; and I always vote as do many others. There are also those that never vote; and they are the ones that shouldn't complain about our government if they don't plan on doing something about it!

@JudyEv We too need such rules. Many don't vote and participate in politics. But they are the ones who will get all the news from social media and criticize everything under the sun that any government does. But they will not take the pain to vote and be a part of bringing change.
