When All Else Fails, I Can Still Write........

March 14, 2021 2:39pm CST
A whole lot of things have happened in the last year or so which makes me appreciate the small things in life. There’s feeding the squirrels this winter, seeing the first flower bloom this spring and watching the children playing next door. But yet, there’s still an air of desperation that surrounds the communities where I live. Gas and groceries have gone up in price and the stock market is steadily going down. People are still out of work and businesses that were booming before and failing now. Even though I am retired I still feel what most people feel and know what they know. But I can still write. Writing is a place where I go to escape from the world. It’s a refuge of sorts where anything can happen at the simple changing of my mind. Writing here will obviously not make me a huge sum of money nor will it influence a publisher to come knocking at my door, but I write anyway. Whether it be in a log or a blog or just something I want to jot down that made my day,..........I write. Someone once said that if the first thing a person wants to do after they get out of bed is to write, then they’re a writer. Sadly, that’s not the case for me because the first thing on my mind is the bathroom then my coffee, then I write. No matter. When I sit at the keyboard it doesn’t have to be for a specific reason other than to watch the words appear mysteriously on the screen. The whole world could be disappearing under my feet and sometimes I wouldn’t know it for I’m in my own little bit of heaven. From my brain, to my fingertips and to the screen......I write.

Most of us on this site jot down our everyday happenings or little anecdotes but those things don't make us writers. have you done any serious writing? i.e a book?

I have been asked on several occasions to sit down, get serious and write a book but alas, what do I write that hasn’t already been written? The old masters from Solomon, Socrates to Dickens and others crafted an art that cannot be surpassed and as it is written in the book of Ecclesiastes, “there is nothing new under the sun” and furthermore, “all is vanity”. I think I’ll keep doing what I’m doing and maybe someday I’ll think of something new to write and maybe it might turn into a book. The good thing about writing nowadays is that the quill is sharp and always has ink and the parchment is always on my desk ready for my thoughts.

@BobbyCole As you say 'there is nothing new under the sun' - we just have to try to find new ways of saying it.

Some of us have a compulsion to write even if it is not always something 'substantial'. Is there a writers' group near you where you can share your writings?

@BobbyCole They certainly sound ideal for a person of your ilk. I'd probably forgo the pipe!

@JudyEv When I was much younger I dated a lass who, on an occasion or two, smoked a corncob pipe but I do understand a lady’s hesitancy to enjoy the habit. Alas, I am 71 and a bodybuilder (among other things) but a nice custard cavendish is so nice once in a great while.

Not really Judy but if there were, this gentleman introvert prefers the influences provided by a front porch. A table, a tablet, a cup of coffee, a lazy hound and sometimes, a pipe filled with some fine cavendish. That’s my writer’s group and some very great friends they are indeed,.

...and, that is what makes you a writer. The fact you find joy in it. That's what makes a writer a writer in my opinion. Finding joy in what you're doing, that you're doing it for you.

I also concentrate on writing, it takes you away from reality into a nicer place. I also create things and sell them online. Although there are so many out there are falling into a depression, and for good reason, I seem to have escaped it. It isn't the little bit of money you might make, for me it is the escape it provides.

It gives a great feeling actually to pen down your thoughts. I also write down my everyday life sometimes. It gives a sense of achievement!
