Can anyone explain why there is opposition in the United States to banning assault rifles?

As someone who lives in a country where guns are illegal, and rightly so (there are a few exceptions, but not many), I always find extraordinary the delight that Americans take in owning guns - and in resisting all attempts to place rules on their ownership. The latest absurdity (though not at all funny) is that a ban on owning assault rifles was allowed to lapse in 2014 and has yet to be renewed. President Biden hopes to do this, but there will of course be opposition from people who support the private ownership of battlefield weapons. What on earth are these people playing at?

I find the US attitude unbelievable but it is so entrenched in their psyche there is no point even discussing it with them. But certainly it would good if assault weapons were banned.
