Need for elderly learning latest technologies

There are many in my surroundings who do not know how to use cell phones. They don't know how to use computers either. My father does not know how to use search engine. While it is difficult to keep people abreast of many things, it is necessary to teach elderly how to use facilities like online transfers, payment through cell phones, online medical consultations, and hiring a cab. So yeah, we do need a few youngsters who could come up with a project call in which they could tell elderly for about 10 dollars you learn basic skills we will spend four days four hours with you. For 20 dollars we will spend 8 days 4 hours with you, irrespective of how many elders are in your household. We will teach you and ensure that you can use these technologies to be independent and guide you to buy an affordable device that serves your purposes. Thereafter an year's guidance online for whatever are your doubts and 4 additional visits should there be any doubts. Unemployed youngsters can join the system, and help the elderly in their neighborhood, so that they do not incur traveling costs. I think elderly hesitate to tell others they do not know something. I got much of my guidance from @DaddyEvil. I ain't gonna thank him. He is my friend. I also learned from JJ. Some are simply better equipped to understand electronics I feel.

My parents can only use Whatsapp, they don't understand how to use anything else. They can at least understand electronics if they learn slowly.

@May2k8 It is easier to learn from outsiders than from family members. And people like to get their money's worth, so that small charge. Youngsters too would earn something, and if they are in software, they would develop more ideas as to where the problems can be reduced. They would also learn to be patient with the elderly since they would have forced themselves to be patient for monies.

Wouldn't you like that they learn how to download some apps that enable them to hire cabs, pay bills, recharge their cell phones, enjoy the company of others on Zoom, consult doctors, etc.? I would.

Funny - they won't listen to us, but are willing to learn from the younger generation.

I feel like we can learn from others and we can teach others too without knowing how in particular just exchanging how tos without realizing it. I can almost take out a Master in Microsoft and all that stuff I had to learn all by myself but I did it an still learning.

I agree. Elderly are more likely to share their new skills among others in their group. But less likely to ask their children to teach them.

My father is better than I in many aspects. I tend to teach him and forget because he likes to do things, feel in control. My time will come.

You have a very good idea! Youngsters who are now a days very good in high tech gadgets can earn money by teaching the older generation some basic knowledge on how to use the android phone or computer. Computer literacy is a must these days.

My mother in law would benefit from this. She has a smart phone, but only cares to use the phone part - she does has no interest in the rest. But I think part of it comes from not knowing how to use it - it frustrates her greatly. We have tried to teach her, same with my sister in law and others - but she just won't try.

Some want to learn, some would love to have a social service where to go and they do the online work for them. My mother was not at all interested to know how computers work or how to make an online payment. I did for her and I am glad she did nothing, a mistake there can cost a lot of money.

There are two sides to the same coin. While mistake can cost a lot of money, trusting another person to do the job can cost a lot of money too. I am childless. There will be a time in my life when I may not be able to do many of the things I can do now. Then I might have to depend on others. It is then that "trust" factor will come up. If I don't trust the person and cannot do anything about it?

@LadyDuck True that...but if the elderly are starting whatever it is, they are hardly going to have much of data that can be shared. As to bank account, there can always be ways. Like family member can open the bank account that needs to be linked to mobile paying account. And also open another account for the elderly to learn how to transfer monies from one bank to another and how to pay from computer or mobile phones. If the amount is not too much, I doubt if youngsters would be interested.

@vandana7 This also apply trusting a young person to come to your home and to teach... I talk about volunteers appointed by the Mayor, who are trustful people, we have them here. I would never let someone come inside my house to "teach me" what to do. Who tell me that he does not "steal" my data?

I'm still a novice concerning technology - I didn't touch a computer until I was 73 (I'm 81 now). it's not easy to learn new things now, and your idea of getting youngsters to help is a good one.

Technologies are changing rather rapidly these days. Yesterday's knowledge is no longer valid. It then becomes necessary to learn at least somethings that are basic necessities from the new world.

It is good that elderly can learn from the youngsters how to use a smartphone or a computer. I just hope that the youngsters have patience to teach the elderly.

It depends on the interest of the concerned person too.My mom has learnt a lot in this one year as she had to do so as her job as University professor. I am like mom..not much into technology and I too had a steep learning in this last one year for my profession. I was always equipped with the needed things to manage house and finance. My 97 years old grandaunt puts everyone to shame. She is so active and technologically updated. She calls us for zoom family meeting. And she is using voice to text app too. Actually she is translating many books into different regional languages and Sanskrit. Keeps her busy. She knows 10 Indian languages ( speaking, reading and writing) and is fluent in English, French and Spanish. She is an inspiration for us.

Another thing that elderly should have some knowledge about is Zoom family meetings. I think most elderly are hesitant to admit they don't know. Or unaware of the advantage. They depend upon their kids or daughters in law or sons in law or grandchildren. That is a handicap for them, and may be irritant to other family members. If differences do crop up, they would have to start from scratch. Knowledge helps. It gives confidence. It makes others also feel they are not indispensable, to they behave better. In any event, letting elders know they can use this app like this and that app like that is not such a bad thing, is it?

@vandana7 It's not at all a bad thing. In fact we should teach them. After all they have taught us so much back then. But you are right they might be hesitant to ask or people around them might not be so receptive. So your idea of having youths do it as social services or paid services is actually a good one

@arunima25 There is complacence when it comes to family members. They will teach. Necessity is mother of invention they say. As long as family members are doing it, they won't feel the need. But need can arise. Another reason is ego. They feel awkward to be learning from their children. Grandchildren they wouldn't mind. But grandchildren generally don't spend time with elderly once they are in teens. That is why youth. It will teach youth patience indirectly. Learning by paying makes people more attentive.
