The Wake. (Thumbing my nose at the poem-hater)

There was an old fellow called Fred
who sadly had died in his bed,
a grand wake was planned
the venue was crammed
as word of his passing had spread.
While friends were all supping their beers
and some even mopping their tears
from inside the coffin
there came some faint coughing,
they couldn't believe their own ears.
They then heard a grunt and a groan,
it's shocking to hear a corpse moan
"Good heavens" they said
"he's not really dead
this wake we will have to postpone".
Fred started to shiver and shake
they plied him with whisky and cake,
he revived and inquired
"You thought I'd expired?
thank goodness it was a mistake".
"In olden times they used to tell
of coffins wherein there's a bell,
the next time I die
put one where I lie,
as that way I won't have to yell."
Inspired by the song 'Finnegan's Wake'.
I've written a sequel to this about Fred's wife's reaction. I'll put it up soon.

Each year there are some mighty pranks which end up in the April Fool's Day hall of fame-- but nothing beats this one.

@jaboUK Oh yes but talking about wake for me is sad. Maybe because of my emotional problem.

That's great, Janet. I may return to respond in kind but I'm waiting to work and nothing came to me as I was reading it. So... Maybe not.
