A long time ago I used to take care of a guy in a wheelchair; his Dad had a nice place in the woods along the coast and we'd go out there every summer and have fun; it had a deck and a gas barbecue and a nice big yard where we'd have bonfires and drink beer and smoke a little you-know-what. Anyway, his Dad had a friend who dove for abalone, these big shellfish that are rare and almost a delicacy; usually very expensive. They left us a bunch of them in the freezer; my client showed me how to make them; pound them hard with a mallet because otherwise they're too tough; dipped them in egg and then crushed up crackers and fried them. They were delicious, I can tell you that. Last time I went to a restaurant I think a plate of them cost $40. Realized how awesome it was that I got to have them out there at my client's Dad's cabin. You had quite the summer. I'd love to hang out in a cabin by a coast.

Yeah, it really was amazing. It was a beautiful place. It would be just me and my client and one other caregiver and she was awesome too. A lot of fun in beautiful surroundings. A very long time ago too. Well let's just say a couple decades ago.

@NateB11 Eons ago I was a caregiver to all manner of senior folks. One character lived on a nearby island so I rode a ferry for 8 minutes to get to her. I write short stories. She was featured in one.

@sallypup That's interesting. I bet you have some interesting stories, doing that kind of work you get exposed to some interesting people and situations. I took care of people for a long time and still do sort of what you'd call social work. Been around a lot of people for a long time.

Sounds like great memories. These remind me of oysters.

Yeah, they're sort of big meaty oysters. They have big shiny shells, sometimes I used to see them along the beach.

I had them pounded by fishermen and then cooked them. I liked them only with homemade mayo or in a delicious and difficult dish that my maternal grandma taught me how to make.

What a special time and treat that was. I have heard of them but never tasted them. A delicacy.
