I'm Not Afraid

Neighbors Walking my Neighborhood

I live in San Luis Obispo County in California. My neighborhood is a typical housing tract. Once in a while people take walks along the sidewalk or in the park. Most people don't wear masks when they are outside walking. They do move away when they are about to get near someone from another family so that they can maintain social distance. Our police and sheriff here do not actively enforce the masking and other virus related laws unless there are serious violations that are likely to affect public safety. Grocery stores and other businesses do require masks before letting you in, but I once passed someone in an aisle who had no mask and was coughing without covering his mouth. Fortunately I didn't get sick. I don't wear a mask when walking outside. I try to maintain social distancing. I'm almost 80. I'm not afraid anymore. My research has shown that if I get the virus my chance of dying is still only 5%. At my age I'm more likely to die of something else one of these days anyway. I try to keep my immune system strong all year every year, especially during flu season. I don't plan to get vaccinated this year. I've researched that, too. If I get sick with anything, or even feel I'm coming down with something, I stay home until I'm fully recovered. I rarely get flu shots and have had the flu only once (that I'm aware of) in the last few years. This country has supported the idea of personal responsibility paired with constitutional liberty since its founding. It's only in the last few decades it's become such a nanny state. I'm old enough to have watched the transformation. I had Scarlet Fever when I was a child before they had antibiotics. I also lived through a polio epidemic when I was young, and that was scary. When the polio vaccine became available, mothers rushed to get their children vaccinated and we got our shots willingly. We'd seen the pictures of children in iron lungs. For some reason I'm not afraid of Covid as I was of polio. I'm in God's hands. He controls how long I live. My son died at 14 and he was as healthy as one could be. We are all in danger as soon as we step outside our doors. I will stay away from others when I'm sick for their sake. They also need to take responsibility for keeping a social distance from others and wearing a mask when appropriate. But the government should not shut down businesses and then let untested people cross our border, crowd them together, and turn them loose to disappear and possibly infect many others. If citizens need to be regulated, so do people need to be tested before entering our country. Either our government is serious about keeping everyone safe or it's all politics. I tend to think it's the latter. In response to @Chellezhere

I respect the others, I wear my mask, it is mandatory here, I know that this is also to protect myself, but I am not frightened by Covid. We can die for many different causes, stroke, heart attack, cancer... hit by a car while perfectly healthy.

Exactly. Except that until now I've never worn a mask, I've always done what I can to protect myself and others when I've been sick with any disease that may be contagious. I only makes sense to stay home and get well when sick. Unfortunately, some people can't afford to skip work if they don't get paid for sick days, and so they do go in when sick, thus exposing others. That's one reason I avoid eating out during flu season.

@bagarad All our restaurants and bars are closed, we cannot eat out even we would like to. I go grocery shopping once a week and I wear my mask, it is mandatory and I am glad that it is. Not all people stay home when they are sick.

Very well written my friend. The border is a crisis. No doubt. And seems to be getting worse each day. We are expected to do one thing. The illegals can do what they want and be provided for. No questions asked.

It upsets me that illegals are getting free services our own homeless do not get. We pay for it and the government takes the credit for being compassionate when they are really making it harder for their own citizens to find jobs and get services. Even their children's education is impacted with overcrowded classroom.

@bagarad It is a crazy situation and nobody seems concerned. They are also being housed in hotels, fed and taken care of by us. Legal citizens are getting nothing.

@CarolDM That's what upsets me so. We pay and Gavin gets the credit for being compassionate. Looks like he'll be opening the state up again before the recall election. Guess he's getting scared.

It is good that people follow protocols of social distancing so even without masks, you will be at a safer distance

I agree. This most important when among strangers. When with family and friends we would automatically keep our distance when we suspect we could be coming down with something and just explain our lack of hug or shaking hands.

I fully understand. I'm not getting the vaccine either. I mask when in public, though it's not required at church.

My church still requires it for inside services, and seats are socially distanced according to who has reserved them. Family groups are six feet apart.

@bagarad I'll be so glad when the pandemic is over and we can return to a normal lifestyle. No masks required.

Like you, my mother is careful but not too worry about Covid-19. I wonder if this pandemic will go away completely one day.

The disease will probably stick around, with a new variant from year to year. I think we will have to learn to live with it, as we have done with other serious contagious illnesses.

@bagarad They talked about 1919 and the Spanish flu. Guess with time, we will conquer this Covid-19 from our 2019. (Let hope there is no similarity between 1939-1945 and 2039-2045.)

i suspect at this point that the issue of masks is so wound around politics that we wouldn't know where is ended.

Not worried either, I wish they would leave up to us as to what we want to do. I have actually had it, kept me down for 2 days, had a bad head ache, was tired. I have read different ideas on how long I am immune for, anywhere from 3 months to a lifetime. not getting the vaccine either

We need to use common sense precautions for ourselves and for others during flu season or when any contagious disease is spreading -- not just Covid.

I only wear a mask outside when it starts to get busy, so that is on the High Street,by the shops.
