Our Internet Cable Got Cut.

Pretty and I were doing our normal internet activities this past Thursday when suddenly we couldn't reach the internet. We tried rebooting our computers, checked the modem and router and finally, called our internet provider to see what happened. We use a company called Suddenlink. They said there was nothing wrong with our service... So we went looking... When we moved into this house and had internet installed, Covid had just started. The cable installer brought the cable over and plugged us in but didn't bury the cable. It runs along the line between our yard and our neighbor's yard. Our neighbor mowed the cable. We reported the cable broken Thursday afternoon. Since This was a holiday weekend, we were told we wouldn't get a repairman until today. (Monday) Pretty kept asking me what we did before we had internet. I read 3 books, we cleaned up our yard getting it ready for summer and we cleaned house, getting several things done that we kept putting off for one reason or another. Has someone ever mowed your internet cable in half? The picture has nothing to do with this discussion. That is Pretty sitting on the front porch at our old house. Photo is mine.

No. But, I was watching Looking For Mr. Goodbar when someone else did, and that cable was attached to the house (so not on the ground). I think he hit it with the weed whacker.
Directed by Richard Brooks. With Diane Keaton, Richard Gere, Tuesday Weld, William Atherton. A dedicated schoolteacher spends her nights cruising bars, looking for abusive men with whom she can engage in progressively violent sexual encounters.

I've heard of that happening, too. This is the first time we've ever experience this type of problem. We couldn't believe how much we missed the internet! Yes, I have internet on my phone and can hotspot it, but I don't have unlimited internet on my phone. I usually only use 1Gb in a month so only have 6Gb on it. Since my daughter makes more money online than I do, I hotspotted her computer, instead of mine.

@DaddyEvil That was sweet of you to do that for her. Once when a big game (I think it was a football game) was about to start, the cable went out. I knew it wasn't just us, because neighbors had all come outside to check with each other. It was a widespread outage, and had been caused my a squirrel chewing through the line at the box.

@Chellezhere I could stand, barely, not talking with people on myLot for a few days but the internet is where Pretty makes her money. Unless I want to pay for everything, it's better for her to have internet than not. We've lived in this house for a year and a half now and have only met the neighbors who live right beside us. We talk with the ones on our left all the time. The people living on our right... we only talk to them if we are forced to talk to them.

I've spent three hours responding to my notifications since the cable was fixed. I've never paid much attention to how much time I spend online until now. (But I can also get lost talking on myLot and not realize how much time I'm here, too. )

Ugh! Our cable line can't be mowed over . . . it's above ground from roof to wires on poles. But we've had times where there was no internet . . . usually just a few minutes, but sometimes hours - nothing you can do but wait. I don't mind though because it does make me get back to real life - yah, and get some things done. Felt productive during that time, didn't it ?

@DaddyEvil Here, it seems like all the wire stuff is way up there . . . I don't know the technicalities about any of it. They may not get mowed, but I have seen naughty squirrels chewing on them. I don't know what wire it was, but it got chewed on so much that we had to get someone out to put a chew guard there! We have some boxes in the garage still . . . after almost 9 years here . Hope you found some forgotten treasures! I still need to find the milkshake blender thingie .

@much2say Some boxes in the garage still? Here I thought you'd make fun of me for not getting everything unpacked within a week or two of moving.

I'm not sure why the internet cable goes from a pole in the neighbor's yard to our house... I would have thought it was all underground except for the actual hookups themselves. That's how the cables went at the old house. Yeah, some of the unpacking we've put off since we moved here is finally done. We found several items we knew we packed but hadn't found yet.

Nope but my coconut tree leaves did it. You see internet cables here are not buried. They hand in a pole. The pole is right out of the gate and the cable goes to the roof. So when one of the coconut leaves fell, it fell through the cable.

The worst Internet nightmare I experience was last August, Suddenly a wild thunderstorm zapped our cable box and ended our Internet. It took 3 weeks fo get the Internet back and 5 visits from the phone company, I was going crazy but had plenty of videos to keep me company plus books to read.

OMG! My daughter would go insane if she had to do without internet for that long! Why did it take so long and so many repair visits to get everything fixed?

Once in a great while our internet might go out for an hour or so, but this is the longest we've been without internet since we bought our first computer in 2000.

Awww, she had a kitty. And here I thought you only had sharks. I'm lucky, the cable for my service is underground and no one mows anywhere near it cuz there ain't no grass.

I'm sorry about your walking sharks. The cable guy didn't do a very good job putting the cable underground, will they redo the job to make it safer?

That was a stray she was petting. We aren't allowed to have pets, other than my fishies. (My walking sharks passed away a year ago.) Ours is supposed to be underground, too.

Our remote stopped working about a week ago. We were in the middle of a program and our reception went out for the remainder of the day. Jay called cable, they tried to reboot, but it didn't work. They mailed us a new remote, then Jay called them to reboot with this new one. So far, it's working just fine:)

@DaddyEvil I often wonder what people did before cell phones were invented. I can see why she asked that. Sorry about him mowing over the cable. That is too bad you have to be put on with the neighbor. See, you found something else to do and hope that the time went by fast for you both.

I know what I did before we had internet. I used to watch tv (which I haven't done in roughly 14 years), I read books, I worked in my yard and I visited with friends. It's been too cold/rainy to work in the yard and I haven't seen my friends since the pandemic started. *shrug* Yes, we had a good few days, thank you, it did.

@Hannihar I'm online when I'm reading since my phone downloads the book page by page. Sometimes I don't go out when it is sunny and warm. My doctor told me to stay out of the sun.

@DaddyEvil I see. So you do not read books that you hold in your hands? Those are the only kinds I like because on our Sabbath and certain holidays I cannot be on the computer so like to read and spend time with my cat.

I've never heard of this before. My internet went down for a few hours just recently and it felt like a big loss. So I understand but had to laugh at this too because I don't think anyone has given this reason before for downtime.

Oh my, this could sound funny, but it is not funny at all. No one ever mowed our Internet cable, but when we built the external garden room, those who came to work CUT the big pipe will all the electric cables to our home. They immediately called the electrician and the problem was fixed the same day.

@DaddyEvil No one got electrocuted because there are very well done "life saver" cabinets, as soon as they touched the cables the power was disconnected, but they were already damaged.

@LadyDuck That's nice! As far as I have seen that type of installation isn't done here. One of my brothers spent several weeks in the hospital once when the bulldozer he was operating accidentally cut through buried power cables.

I have satellite so every time it rains or snows, I go through that. And there's no choice, there are 3 companies available here and they all have the same service for about the same price.

Oh, that sucks! There are five internet providers here. Two satellite providers who charge over $100 for unlimited internet and three cable internet providers. Suddenlink charges $64 a month for unlimited service. Their service is faster than the others and they don't shut it off in the middle of the night like the other two cable service providers. (Pretty uses 799 Gb a month and I use 30 Gb a month.)
