Back to the album cuts, but staying in classic rock, it’s time for another song with “fool” in the title. Boy, was there some great music in the mid-70s (“Dream Weaver” notwithstanding )! And here’s another example of that fertile era. #6: Ship of Fools - Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band And while Kenny Rogers decided he was going to turn Bob Seger into a “country” songwriter by covering “We’ve Got Tonight” (if you’ve never heard Rogers’ version, don’t go searching for it....remember, you can NOT un-hear something), here’s a Seger song that surprisingly wasn’t ever picked up in country music. Not that it sounds like a country song, but it’s far easier to stretch this to country than “We’ve Got Tonight.” You know, we’re talking 45 years later, and this iconic album still holds up so, so well as a brilliant blend of rockers and mid-tempo tunes. Of course, everyone knows the title track, which was Seger’s “breakthrough” to commercial success, but the album from start to finish is a gem. So if you haven’t listened to this album in a while, take it out and enjoy this song and all the other greats. And if you’ve never heard it before, enjoy it for the first time....and see why we crow so much about how great our generation’s music is.
