Indulgences? I Thought the Catholic Church forgot those AGES ago, but ...

... but my recent *Heart of the Nation (Milwaukee (Wisconsin) church that broadcasts Catholic Mass every Sunday)* somehow connects 'the Catholic doctrine of Indulgences" to Saint Faustina (the nun who commissioned the famous "Jesus, I Trust in You"-painting (the painting which Jesus told her was supposed to be an 'object for veneration')). They say (and this is ALL 'them' ... tho I'll try to use 'Our Father' or 'EL' instead of "God") that sin--even tho it's forgiven by Our Father--has consequences ... punishment on Earth, mostly as you finish living but also while you sit in purgatory. Jesus told Sister Faustina that 'He'll COMPLETELY forgive anyone who goes to Confession & Holy Eucharist on the Sunday-after-Easter.' Now, this isn't "excusing" the doctrine; but the main 'Thesis' that Martin Luther had against it (one of "The 99" he nailed up on the church door as he started Protestantism) was the SELLING of Indulgences. (Maybe he ALSO disliked the general doctrine--believing The Bible said 'ALL consequences of sin' are erased by Our Father--but I guess the Catholic Church couldn't change their policy on that (except to stop taking money for the Indulgences).) They give these five steps to take instead of- (or as well as- ) giving money: "Facing a devout image of Jesus ... 1) Pray an Our Father and The Creed; 2) Unite spiritually with those seeking an Indulgence; 3) Offer a prayer--as well as personal sufferings and hardships in life--to the merciful Lord; 4) Resolve to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation & Holy Eucharist as soon as possible; and 5) Offer prayer (Our Father, Hail Mary, etc.) for the Pope's intentions." This ... This re-ignites my desire to educate The Sheep as to the meaninglessness of their bleating to The Good Shepherd

Yes, Catholics are not yet Protestants and they have indulgences. This year is Saint Joseph's year and there are 6 different plenary indulgences that you can get at various times of the year by looking or praying St Joseph. And there are also plenary indulgences for Easter and Christmas. And many other.

But you tell a Christian/Catholic that, and they respond with some nonsense-loophole from The Bible ... something l 'Our Father uses the wisdom of the fools to make the wise look foolish.'
