Yes I'm Allergic, No I won't get rid of my animals!

I've developed an allergy to my dog and cat. It happened after an operation I had to have and apparently after such an operation it's quite common. I take allergy pills and an inhaler and that suits me fine. We brush and bathe the dog and brush the cat to minimise shedding. It's there but it's manageable. But the asthma review nurse told me she would "recommend you re-home the cat and the dog." First of all who says that? As if I'm just gonna go "yeah okay, I've had the cat for 8 years and rescued the dog 2 years ago but hey they'll be okay!" Secondly I would rather spend the money on prescriptions than get rid of my babies. I love them. I understand intellectually where the nurse was coming from, but I think it showed a lack of compassion. What would you have told her?

I’ve been allergic to animals my whole life. Honestly if your taking meds or know what about animals triggers a reaction you cna easily live with animals. I take allergy meds daily and I’m just fine around my ferrets other cats and dogs. What I’m allergic to isn’t so much there fur but is there slivia when they lick me.

@Lindalahughes it can be different types some does have fur and other hair hair. Dogs with hair typically are hyper allergenic so they set of allergies less. Also the type of hair they have long hairs animals tend to make me more itchy then short hair.

It's weird, I'm fine with my dog and cat. But other dogs and cats set me off like crazy. Maybe it's an exposure thing?

It's not a huge deal, but the way she went about saying it annoyed me.

I would spend money on prescriptions as well instead of sending them away. That would be break my heart more than getting the allergy.

I would've probably said GFK because I am not going to rehome my animals. They need me just much as I need them and I wouldn't be able to stop worrying about them. Medical professionals will claim compassion goes a long way, but they wind up hyper-focused on one thing and forget the other possible side-effects. Mental health is just as important. And, if I can still care for them, then that's what I'll do, algery or not.

Precisely. I would literally hate myself if I did that. Especially since the meds take care of everything.

For your health it would be better but I would not get rid of mine either. I would consider not getting anymore later is all.

It's a difficult choice, but if I were in your shoes, I wouldn't get rid of my dog too

I see where she was coming from, but everything's under control so I see no issue.
