Into the top five we sail in this half of the dual countdowns looking at songs with “old” and “age” in the titles, in honor of my birthday earlier this month. Today’s “age” song is appropriate, given he was teenage idol.... #5: I’m Going to Be a Teenage Idol - Elton John Hey, it’s that Reggie guy again!! Yep, Sir Elton is back and better than....oh, wait, this was nearly 50 years ago. And, of course, that’s part of Elton’s magic. It was almost 50 years ago that this album, which spawned his first #1 hit (“Crocodile Rock”), was released. And it still sounds good. (Not technically, though: as JJ and I have discussed, a lot of EJ’s albums had a “muddy” sound to them, but especially this one.) Maybe a little tongue-in-cheek, but this song was foreshadowing: by the next year, Elton was on the cover of every teenybopper magazine out there, even bumping off the DeFranco Family and Donny Osmond! That aspect faded, but Elton’s music has outlasted just about everyone who was on those magazine covers. He made it big, and he stayed on top!!!
