Stand-Offish

United Kingdom

I'll start a conversation with anyone. Yesterday I had a half an hour chat with a stranger about a yellow wagtail bird. I do this on a regular basis. Talk to strangers, start up conversations. I'm always polite and respectful. But about 3 or 4 days ago my wife told me that I was stand-offish. I don't get it, she NEVER starts conversations with people and often makes fun of me when I do! So I genuinely don't get why she said that to me? Any ideas? Has someone said something about you that you just don't get?

It's ok dear. Everyone is different. She would have said it in joke. Take care

Maybe she's a little jealous that you have conversations easily.

I enjoy conversations with strangers too, Maybe you'll just have to ask your wife what she meant by that comment.

In my opinion, your wife certainly means well. Maybe she was referring to how you have a tendency to brush people off when they are trying to explain something. Or you tend to label your well-wishers as wishy washy when they don't even mean any harm. By the way, you don't always have to start a conversation with people first to not be stand-offish. You may always be the first to start the conversation with people, but it may later spiral downwards coz maybe you can't keep up with it and your wife noticed that. That's why she prolly made fun of that part towards you. And that certainly sounds standoffish to her, in a way.
