Don't worry about guessing - I'll just tell you what this is

I won’t ask you to guess what this is but will just explain it and not waste your time.
My mother had a hip replacement at 99. She came to stay with us for a while before the operation. She was in quite a bit of pain from her hip and spent quite a bit of each day in bed. She would often call for me for one reason or another but sometimes I wouldn’t hear her.
Vince concocted this ‘alarm’ for her to use. The black switch was mounted on a block of wood so it would be easy for her to find and activate. It was connected to a door bell unit which was loud enough to wake me if I was sleeping and/or to reach to all parts of the house.
We were very pleased with our efforts but there was a downside. We found that Mum used the bell very, very often so I was forever running back and forth to her. Which was okay but really I just wanted to show you the bell we devised.
Now I have to decide what to do with it. I guess I’ll keep it for when one of us need it. It might be fun to have Vince running back and forth at my beck and call.

Vince will probably just hire a kid off the street to run and see what you need instead of him doing it all the time.
Or, if Vince is the one ringing the bell, I've just given you a great idea.

Yep, it should be his turn to run. I would save it as well. I did a variety of things for my first husband to call me and communicate when he developed ALS.

If friend had something like that, it would probably be in the on position 24/7. . He will not be getting any bells!

@JudyEv When my poor grandad was in the nursing home, he would call my dad with strange requests like two McDonalds hamburgers, or a particular brand of comb or something..just a way to reassure themselves loved ones are still there I guess

@snowy22315 I'm sure they get very lonely from time to time too.

That's a very clever device. I wear a whistle around my neck so that I can call my husband if I need him.

They said she was healthy enough to have the op. She told the doctor it only needed to last six months as she just wanted to get to 100. He said it would last a lot longer than that. She lived to 104 but at least was pain-free mostly.
