I bought watermelon the other day. Cut some for dessert and use a bit to make watermelon salad (kerabu tembikai in my language) This salad reminded me of a discussion that I heard once while I was in university.
A couple of freshmen were talking. From their dialect, they're most likely from Kuala Lumpur. It's their first time to be in the North, where we were studying. Their main topic was local food. I tried not to eavesdrop, but it's hard not to when they're one or two seats next to me and were very loud.
"People in the North eat weird food!" one of them said.
"I know! I saw anchovies salad the other day. They even make a salad out of watermelon!"
Then, they noticed me, a senior and, quickly shut up. I didn't even say anything though, just staring at them. One tried to make amend and said it's their first time eating those food.
So, I told them to taste the food first, then judge. Each local might have its specialty cuisines. We can't say it's weird because we never eat or don't like it. It's rude!
Image is an example of the watermelon salad. Just grated some watermelon and mix with salt, shrimp paste, shallots and, chilies.

Pretty and I eat a lot of watermelon, but never made into a salad. I'd have to try a bite to see if I like it or not.
We bought some watermelon a couple of days ago but threw it away. It was bitter tasting.

@prinzcy Yes, it was red watermelon and yes, it was very bitter. It tasted like cucumbers. Sometimes, in the middle of watermelon season we get some that taste a little like that. When it happens, we start buying them from a different store. (When watermelons taste like that it means the farmer grew them too close to his cucumber patch.) Buying watermelons from a different store usually means getting them from a different farmer.

@prinzcy when the twins were little, they hated everything. I told them that one night of the week, we were going to do try night. you had to try what was served.
Amazing, the twins will now eat almost anything!

I could see what looked like jalapeno's which is a type of chili or pepper. I see what looks like red onion to me. I am trying to imagine it.

Last year I came across a recipe for watermelon salad - just lots of cubes of watermelon, cubes of crumbly white cheese such as Cheshire (English cheese) or Feta (Greek cheese) and chopped fresh mint sprinkled over. It was so simple but so fresh and tasty, it quickly became a favourite!
