Is it ok to drink milk after the sell-by date?

I bought milk yesterday and the sell-by date says May 3rd. I still have the previous milk I bought so won't be opening the new one yet. How long after the sell-by date is it still good to drink this new milk?

Yeah. That seems like the best thing to do. Taste more than smell. Sometimes it may smell bad when you smell it because of the container but the milk itself is fine.

Well that really depend so the milk. Sell by date is like the best estimate of when it might go back. It could be before that date, or after that day could be on that date. Many reason why I don’t like milk

@lovebuglena they can because it’s pastries so there are not sure when it’ll actually be bad by. Typically anyways humans where not designed to drink cows milk. My kids do and it goes quick so I don’t worry about the date to much. I do pick one up and get the date as far back as I can that way if e kids don’t use it all right away it’s good longer.

I wish they would put an actual expiration date on dairy products rather than the sell-by date. But then again dates don't guarantee the products will stay good by those dates.

I always pay attention to the sell-by date. This time I thought it said May 13th and just realized it says May 3rd. I guess the sell-by date doesn't mean anything as it can go bad before the date as well.

Mainly we use milk for coffee and add it to eggs when we make an omelet. It doesn't go quick if we do just that. If I eat cereal for many days or drink milk with cookies then it will go faster.

I think it is okay to drink it 2 days expired, unless it smells.

A sell-by date is not an expiration date. The milk just has a sell-by date, which is the date the store should sell the milk by. There is no expiration date written on it.

You go by the smell and taste with milk. As long as it still smells and tastes okay, you can use it. We bought a half gallon of milk a few days ago and it went bad two days later. When we took it back we were told that a lot of the milk that came in when ours did was being returned.

I wonder what happened. I am assuming you got your money back. That's great!

@lovebuglena We don't know and yes, we got our money back. We've switched to almond milk instead of cow's milk. It keeps longer and works fine for everything we used cow's milk for.

@DaddyEvil Usually I have no issues with cow's milk. It is usually pretty good for about a week after we open it.

Usually it is good several days after the sell-by date and anyway it is not dangerous, at most the taste gets a bid more acidic.

@lovebuglenaYou should smell it before tasting, you can feel from the smell if it turns acidic.

@LadyDuck There where times when I smelled the bottle and it smelled sourish but then I tried the milk and it was fine.

When it comes to milk you are probably good for about a week after you open it. I'd use the smell test as you are getting through it though. But most things aren't expired after the sell by date. I have eaten eggs a month after the date on the carton and they were just fine.

If I don't open a carton of milk by the sell-by date I can open it afterward and it will be good for a week?

@lovebuglena So long as you not too far past the sell by date. If you open it a year after the sell by date, it will still be spoiled milk immediately. lol

I don't know, but if it's past the sale date I throw it away immediately

I guess it's good just to be safe. But you can taste it and if tastes fine no reason to throw it out.
