My native language is hard to learn

Putting myself in my student's shoes, I simply realized how hard it is to learn Tagalog. Like it has no logic at all unlike Math English is the easiest one I think. And Spanish too. But language is my least favorite. I think the best way to learn it is to live in that place and speak it or practice it with the native. What language have you been learning?

I don't think English would be easy for someone who hadn't been exposed for it. The pronounciation rules are many and often confusing, and it's a lot of words. I think that which language is the easiest to learn will depend on what languages you already speak. I'm Norwegian, so Swedish should be easy since I don't really have to learn to read it. Since I speak English and German, Dutch shouldn't be very difficult. So I tried Northern Sami instead. Trickier, but not impossible. But Tagalog must have an inner logic? All languages has an inner logic/grammar, that's what make them languages and not just random sounds.

@popciclecold Sami is a group of languages spoken in the far north of Europe, the biggest on has 25 000 speakers. The others ones are really small, from 6 to 600, so it's no wonder you haven't heard of it. It's related to Finnish, Estonian and Hungarian, and other languages much further east.

Most people complain that English is very hard to learn. I know vanny complains all the time about it. When I was in High School, I took classes in speaking French. I still remember quite a bit of it. In the real world, I've learned a little Spanish, a little Italian and a little Hindi. (vanny makes fun of my attempts at Hindi. I'm really not very good with it.)

@Janet357 Honestly, to Pretty and I, vanny has no accent when speaking English. (A few years ago I made the mistake of mimicking an Indian accent I heard all the time when dealing with cell phone problems... She wasn't amused. *sigh* ) Her accent, when speaking English, is beautiful. She claims she can't understand a word I'm saying.

Learning Math is harder to learn for me than learning Tagalog language. Tagalog is not my mother language as I came from the south of the Philippines and we speak Bisayan. But I learned Tagalog very well through reading Tagalog magazines and books in my younger years in Pinas. Nowadays, I often speak Tagalog as my Filipina friends in Germany only speak Tagalog and of course German. The hardest language I have learned was German language. Learning English language for me was not hard compared to learning German as I have learned it since I was in Kindergarten.

I love language . . . and I often pick up phrases and words here and there from friends . . . but funny I have not picked up Tagalog! I can recognize the accent when English is spoken, but the only Phil words I know is foods - and what you call family (like Nanay or Kuya). Besides English, I know Japanese, Spanish . . . and a little bit of Farsi (Iranian) and Mandarin.

English seems easy, but there are no rules for the correct pronunciation. Some words written the same have a totally different pronunciation. As I am Italian, Spanish was very easy for me to learn, same for French, but I had a very hard time with German.

I am from Belarus. The two official languages there are Belarusian and Russian. I know that the two languages are similar and they have many words that are identical but I don't really know Belarusian or speak it. I am "fluent" in Russian. I can read and write, though I will make spelling mistakes when I write and I may not understand 100% of what I read. When I was in high school I took Spanish. I remember very little unfortunately.

I found Indonesian easy to learn. I learned the basics within a month and working knowledge in three months. I find languages with gender nouns not easy for others to master.

@Janet357 I have been hearing Tagalog and realize they sound quite like Indonesian. I think Spanish and Italian too sound a bit alike. I took the liberty to address my friend kabayan at another site!
