When The Casting People Email Me, I'm Available

Since I wrote about receiving that surprise check in the mail for an acting job I did three years ago, I thought some might like to know how these things work. On Friday, I got an email asking if I might be available this Friday for a shoot in Portland. I, of course, said yes and am waiting for further info. It is a series that will film eight episodes. I can't say more, since they also swear you to secrecy. The also asked about my Covid vaccine status and, if chosen, I may have to go to their offices ahead of time to be tested for the virus. I do appreciate the cautions they are taking. Waiting is the name of the game. I wait now to hear, then if I am chosen, I generally will not know the time and place until the day before I am to report. It's all very hush-hush. Then, when you get there, again there is waiting around to find out what they want you to do, to wear and when the food is served. They have great catering. Since this is a series, it would be great if I could be cast as a recurring character. It would mean more money, as well as more time driving back and forth (100 miles round trip). But that's showbiz, I guess. I will stay at my daughter's house in Portland as often as I need to, but don't want to leave my wife along more than one day at a time while she is undergoing cancer treatment. It will be a little complicated, but we can work it out. I need to spend a day with my daughter anyway.

@JamesHxstatic. You can ask the film people to give you the scenes which were cut. You can at least enjoy them at home with your family. You can introduce yourself forthwith as an 'almost' star.

Funny thing is, most of the scenes I have been in, end up being cut. I'll never get discovered at that rate!

That sounds both exciting and boring at the same time. At least you get to visit with your daughter.

Sounds like a good opportunity, as long as you don't mind a lot of waiting around! I'm not very good at that, I'd have to take a book or two!

@JamesHxstatic That was a nice surprise getting the check from 3 years ago. Thank you for explaining how things work. I am glad your daughter is there and you can stay with her. Could your wife do the treatments there and then you would not be leaving her? It sounds like they take every precaution they can. It is good to have you back with us.

Hello @Hannihar, thanks for the welcome! My wife will have a limited treatment on Thursday, so she should be okay, barring any problems. I will be gone only one night and we will alert some neighbors that I won't be here.

@Hannihar Thank you again! She is doing pretty well, The Covid thing has not affected us much except for eating out sometimes. She has stayed busy with her art and even attended a SAQA conference held in Australia, virtually, of course. If I get this part, all members of the cast and crew will be tested sometime this week. They asked about everyone's vaccine status so I suppose that vaccine is necessary to be hired. I am not sure if masks will be required on the set when people are not being filmed, but feel confident that they will be careful.

@JamesHxstatic I am glad you will only be gone one night and it sounds like you have all the bases covered. I hope what you will be doing will work out for you and so glad that she will be having a limited treatment. How is she feeling with all that she is dealing with and also the corona? Since you will probably be on a set with many people how does it work? Do you wear a mask and do you stand several feet away from the other actors? You are very welcome for the welcome back. I really enjoyed when you were here and shared what things you appeared in.

Wow congratulations! It's nice to know you got a new acting job. I've also experienced being what we call locally as an "extra" on TV shows. Haven't experienced reading lines though but it was a fun experience nonetheless. I just hate the wait time to shoot scenes so I don't think I'll be doing any of it again in the future. Would love to experience it overseas though. Maybe I will submit my application in future casting calls if I ever go overseas.
