Are all Sports Safe?

So much is being talked about sports, how healthy it is for our body other than the enjoyment we get from it for playing or just even watching any sports we love. But how safe is staying in the game? Are all sports safe to play especially on our kids? Playing any sports year-round is likely to cause an overuse injury. But it is also dangerous to play sports that put stress on the same body parts. For instance, swimming and volleyball put great strain on the shoulders so athletes would not get rest by switching between these sports. A swimmer would be better off switching to biking, which uses different muscles. Kids may want to try even adults yet another strategy is having fun off the field. Although injuries are a danger to athletes at any age, young people face special risks because of their growing bones. Young bones generate new tissues at sports called growth plates, located near the ends of most bones. In the teen years, a protective band of tissue that supports the growth plate starts to break down so the bones can completely harden by adulthood. Without that protection band, the plate can be compressed too much or even pulled apart. (picture is mine)

Some sports are good because all the muscles of your body work... swimming is one of the greatest and safest sports, but some sports are not good.

I have always been into sport when I was studying... it is important to do some warm up first before doing any activity so hat our bones and muscles will not get shocked about it. I've switch sports from time to time when I was younger.. I have played table tennis, arnis, sprint, volleyball, badminton and even basketball.. The accidents and injuries cannot be predicted.. although we put much effort on the safetiness of the one doing it, we cannot determine whether it is coming or not..

It is amazing that you are into sports that much. I have never been into any sports actually because I think I am not really up for it. Good thing that my kids are into it and they took it from their dad.

Reminds me of sports-star Bo Jackson, who tells his kids to play "any sport but football"

Nice information shared. Yes there is always a risk too involved while playing any sport. If you are playing just for fun or exercise don't play a particular sport as that may be stressing on some specific part of the body. That's why in yoga we are taught not to repeat same "aasan" daily.

When it comes to our kids doing sports, it is also the responsibility of the parent to guide the child to proper warm up and cool down exercises as well as the length of time that they do a specific sport. Many sports allow the athlete to wear protective gear, but underneath it all is still that child's body. A nephew of ours was headed towards a scholarship for football, but just 1 bad move and he was under a surgeon's care and will likely never play football again, and all at the tender age of 17.

Yes that is correct. As parents, we have greater responsibility in making sure that we take care of our kids. My boy is into sports and he has been into some minor injuries but I am glad that its not that serious and that never made him give up sports.

Swimming is the best sport and gentle on the body. My boys and grandkids are huge participants in many sports, broken bones and all. Me, too, but we all warm up and cool down with stretches before and after. That helps tremendously.

Swimming is actually easier on your joints than other sports. The water takes the pressure off and makes it easier to exercise. I swim daily and can tell the difference between swimming and the machines in the fitness center.
