RPG (Role-Play Gaming) in My Early Years

I grew up in a-- my father would say we were "a middle-class" family, but he couldn't spend money on video-game systems. The point is that I didn't have access to the entertainment-technology that 'all the other kids' had.
One of my father's attempts to make up for that? We 'invented' a game--a sort-of "Create Your Own Adventure"-program that was based on (he told me) Dungeons & Dragons--using ATARI BASIC.
That kinda fed into my love for a game I would play years later--Final Fantasy Legend, on GAMEBOY. And that's the kind of RPG I like: games like Hero Wars, LEGO Legacy: Heroes Unboxed, etc.
Those are all what they call 'the sandbox-type' RPGs---sure, you (and the team) have a certain 'quest' or 'set of quests' to accomplish; but you're free to send your player(s) anywhere in that area of the game's world (to gather powers-etc.) on your way to accomplishing your goals. https://rpgvaliant.com/articles/7-most-popular-rpg-subgenres/
I think those games really helped me in my recovery from my traumatic brain-injury---giving me practice in organizing efforts to team-accomplishments. Do you ever see how 'your favorite games you played in your youth' enhanced your ability to handle real-life situations? How?
