visitor attacking my front window

I was minding my own business, watching an episode of This Old House when I heard a racket outside my front window. There, much to my surprise was a small bird about three inches tall that would fly up to the window and peck at it a few times then settle back on a branch. Then it would up and do it again. This went on for quite some time and on multiple days. Meet the menace: The photo above is of a Chestnut Backed Chickadee. It is nesting season here and I am certain that it was trying to protect its territory against the reflection that it saw in my front window. My wife tried putting stickers on the window only to have this little menace attack those. (it managed to pull one off the window and was destroying it until my wife intervened) Very aggressive for such a little bit of a bird. Anyway, just wanted to share. Photo is mine, (shot through my front window)

They will do that for sure. Cute photo you got. The little ones can be aggressive.

I've not seen them like this before. But then again, the lot next door used to be wooded, now it's been cleared and I suspect this upset their balance a bit.

@CarolDM Probably. I've seen this with other animals when I was in college Psych classes. It seems to be an inborn trait to protect against others. They don't seem to realize the difference between a reflection and reality.

I've had them and swallows both buzz me in the backyard -- meaning they fly down to within a foot of my head then fly off. So far none have gone so far as to actually touch me. I take it as a warning to stay clear of their nests. I do not bother them if I know where they are, but sometimes you get near without knowing it.

The bird looks cute and it is similar to common sparrow. Unfortunately, we do not get to see sparrows in our area, due to massive urbanization.

@cperry2 No, sparrows are not visible in Metropolitan city, where there is lack of greenery and trees. You meant to say that Chickadee is different from Sparrow?

Wow. I thought sparrows were pretty much everywhere. The Chickadee is about the size of a sparrow but it is more energetic. they hardly ever sit still. I felt privileged to get a decent photo.

@dpk262006 Yes. The Chickadee is much shyer than a sparrow It very rarely sits still for more than a moment. It will sometimes hang upside down to catch bugs in the bark of the trees. I think they are cuter as well. We have two different sparrows in the area, White-Crowned and Golden-Crowned they spend much more time on the ground than the Chickadees do.

They are and for the rest of the season, they are very friendly. Or at least they don't attack the window.

You're such a bad neighbor! The poor little birdie thought he'd found a safe place for his nest and then you go and put a mirror up beside his territory. I've never heard of one peeling a sticker off a window before... He must really think you're evil now!

@cperry2 That is strange... I would have thought once it fell, he'd be happy and leave it alone to "die" on the ground.

@DaddyEvil I agree, I've never seen them go after anything but bugs and seeds.

I hadn't either. These were puffy Christmas stickers and when he got it off the window he dropped down on it and started trying to rip it apart. That has to be one of the weirdest actions I've seen a bird take.

Well, size doesn't matter. Isn't it They are aggressive when it's their nesting season and put all their might to safeguard their territory.. It's a cute picture. Good that your wife's intervention helped.

I guess that would be similar yes. I have never heard of a dog doing that though. I've seen a video of chimps trying to touch the chimp in a reflection. After a bit, they begin to realize it is a reflection. I suppose chimps are a bit smarter.

No, they don't but they seem to be very concerned about encroachment into their nesting area. We've had these birds here since we moved in about five years ago. This is the first time they have declared war on my living room window.

No, after three days it stopped. I am more afraid it is going to hurt itself than anything else.
