How do you communicate when you can't speak the language?

what do you do when you attend a family gathering and everyone speaks a different language than you??

You could get language learning tapes & listen to them when you drive, or just learn a bit before you go. I did it before I went to Europe, I learned some French & German & that got me thru pretty well! I had an advantage that some people wanted to practice their English on me, as much as I wanted to learn from them!
