What Happens To The Rest of the Carrot?

It makes me wonder, when I see baby carrots in the store. What happens to the rest of the carrot?
How baby carrots are made, large sweet carrots are cut into 2 inch pieces and then machined down and rounded. So, this means there must be a lot of wasted carrot from what gets machined down and certain pieces that don't make the "cut" so to speak.
But surely these must be used for SOMETHING and not just thrown away. So, where do the parts of the larger carrot go that don't make it into the bag of baby carrots?

How do you know so much about carrots? I never even knew how they were made. Maybe they save the pieces for carrot cakes but probably it's more likely they get thrown away

@porwest I wasn't thinking of it going into soups and dog products. The only problem might be the shelf life but I suppose the remnants could be frozen first so they aren't nasty before the next place gets them.

@MarshaMusselman I would assume the remnants are probably flash frozen so prepare them for their next use. Although, I do not know that for sure. lol

I guess I am just a curious guy. lol. Plus, having worked in manufacturing for the first 20-25 years of my life, I like to know about processes. I am hoping the outer bits get sold to other companies to make canned soups and broths, pet food, and for other potential uses. Knowing much about business, I am sure they do sell the remnants. It just makes good business sense.

That`s really hard. I think it goes to a place where they can use it for cooking like companies that are making soups

Now that's a very good question
Hopefully the discarded parts get used for something else?

@porwest I'm sure you're right and nothing is wasted. Wouldn't be profitable for the carrot people to waste whatever is discarded.

I am thinking, or rather HOPING they get used for pet food, for making soups and broths and stocks that are canned, or for other things. My guess, the way business operates, there is probably most definitely a buyer on another end for this sort of thing. Very little in business is wasted. Even when I worked for Kraft Foods in the frozen pizza division we used to sell all of our scraps to mink farms and pig farms.

They probably sell it for animal feed would be my guess.

@LindaOHio Having worked in the food industry a good part of the first half of my life, I can surely attest to that.

I make delicious soups for Luna with cut up carrot and potato peels. And when I add tomato skins she is completely happy.

@porwest She prefers human food than dog food. But those are only snacks as dog food has to have all she needs for her nutricion.

as other responder(s) mentioned, it goes to other uses (animal-feed, juicing, etc.) But trying to find out (oh, how the Internet spoils me!) I see a lot of stuff you might want to know.

I had no idea about that. I thought baby carrots were just carrots that are naturally small. Though the shape of them is not how carrots actually look.

@porwest I don't remember the reason why but I recall my mom telling me baby carrots are actually not good to eat.

@lovebuglena I can't imagine why that might be. A carrot is a carrot. At least so far as I know. lol

Baby carrots are harvested before they're fully grown, so they are the whole carrot - we have those here in the UK. 'Baby-cut' carrots (sometimes called baby carrots) are the ones that are cut from larger carrots. The remains of those are used for animal feed or juice.

I expect they would not be thrown away otherwise the cost would be passed on to us. I bet that makes all the carrot tops out there happy

I always thought the trimmings are probably in those bags of shredded carrots at the store. I generally purchase the regular carrots that a person actually has to clean and trim, I think they taste better somehow. They seem more tender to me, too. Not to mention that they are most generally a lot cheaper, but not always. I go by price.

They may well be. I am CERTAIN nothing goes to waste. And perhaps not every company does the same thing with what's left. I heard some say it is used for animal feed. Others suggested it's sold for vegetable juices and soups and soup stocks. Others said they are prematurely harvested carrots. It's probably a little of all of the above actually, although I have no idea. lol

@MarieCoyle Either way, I never thought I would ever be so interested in or fascinated by carrots.

I generally grow carrots in my tiny garden patch. I do plant both sizes, the regular long carrots and I grow what we call baby carrots as well. So they actually can be grown that way, but I know that the little ones we buy probably are the long ones, carved to size.
