Is it an instinctive reaction in babies? What would you call it?

Last night one of my grandchildren (he is 2 years old) did not want to sleep, but with his mother. She slept him and when she left him in bed, within minutes he would wake up crying. My daughter couldn't sleep with him because she had a job to do. Then I remembered that when my children were babies, I told my wife to put a flannel or a bra that she used, not washed, next to the child. I remember that in this way the children hugged the garment or simply by having it close to their face, they fell asleep peacefully. I told my daughter to do it like this and it worked, the boy slept peacefully and allowed him to finish his work. I wonder, is it something instinctive, associated with the survival instinct, or are they just my ideas. What do you think?

Interesting. It could be an early asociation to their mother´s smell.

Marguicha friend, I think it has more to do with a sense of security and protection, since when we did it using my clothes, it also worked.

It works and I have tried it with my children on my mom's advice. Babies associate with the smell of their mother.

Yes it is, it works and my wife and I always used it. That allowed the mother a little more freedom to do things. That "instinct" is lost as children grow, but also their need to have their mother near them.

@profree2019 That;s how Nature has made it. Slowly they have to outgrow our laps and spread their wings.

@arunima25 You are right, it is one of the wonders of nature. Watch them grow and then watch them take flight

You had a great idea. I’ve done it myself and it works so well.

It's a great trick. Let's keep using it as long as there are babies in the family.

I would think anything with the mother's smell would be comforting.

I tell you that the test I did with my children also worked for me. In other words, a flannel from mine had the same effect as from their mother. In this sense, I think it has to do with the sense of feeling safe and protected.

I say that it is the feeling of security and protection that gives them being close not only to the mother, but also to the father. I say it, because the trick with flannels also worked LOL.

That's what my grandma told my mom to do with me too! I'm from Singapore, so it seems this is an old trick that's pretty global :D I've also heard of this being used for pets (i.e. dogs who have separation anxiety).

I agree with you, that's why I mention the instinctuality of that behavior.

Most likely it's the smell. You can just put anything that she wears as it would comfort the baby.

Yes, the baby will feel that she is close and will feel safe.

I personally have never heard of that trick. Though some young children are more prone to nightmares and fears. So feeling their mother is nearby in some way calms them.

I think you are right in terms of calm and security, that feeling close to the mother offers them. I must tell you, this trick also worked when it was my clothes. Of course, maybe not as efficient mind as when they were from the mother.
