Amazon package put in the mailbox instead of the steps

The sponges I ordered from Amazon were supposed to arrive today. I kept checking outside and did not see any package on my steps. Thought it won't get here till later in the day.
Just now I decided to track the order and turned out that it had been delivered. However, instead of putting the package on my steps the person decided to stick it in my mailbox.
When I got to the mailbox to check if the package is actually there, I noticed that the door was partially open and the package was sticking out, as was the mail. It was thundering and downpouring earlier so both the package and the mail got partially soaked. Why in the world would someone stick a package into the mailbox if it didn't fit?
We have a community mailbox for the private street where each homeowner has their own compartment where they put the mail. The mail is put through the back. The lock on our mailbox doesn't work anymore so our mailbox door is never locked but it is always closed.
I doubt that the storm had pushed the door open and pushed the package slightly out of the mailbox. Whoever put the package inside must have pushed it way too far causing the door to open.

The mail carrier blew the call this time.

That is for sure. Sometimes we get deliveries for the neighbors placed on our steps. Their door is around the corner. Don't get why delivery people think our door is theirs.

@lovebuglena I had this happen also, which ended up costing me over $100.

That's entirely possible. I know people tend to be careless when it comes to packages. Hopefully the water didn't do to much damage to what was inside.

@lovebuglena Sounds like there wasn't to much harm done, then.

@kaylachan I guess not. Still don't get why they can't just put packages on the steps...

The sponges did not get wet. Just the packaging. The mail got wet though. Most of it was junk anyway so doesn't matter. But one was not junk so I laid it out flat to dry.

@lovebuglena They should care more, in the mailbox I had bills that I could barely read because they were soaked.

That's terrible. I once found a package not on my steps but by the garage and it was wet.

Good thing that I went to Amazon to track my order... Wish I had done that earlier in the day before the downpour happened. But it didn't cross my mind that the package would be placed in the mailbox. I kept checking the front steps as that's where I expected the package to be. And I kept checking because these days delivery people just drop the package on the steps and do not even ring the bell, so you don't even know the package is already delivered unless you keep opening the door to check.

@lovebuglena I would probably have been in the same boat as you. You expect certain things to be in certain places. At least you were able to check and ultimately find it, and I am assuming while the package got wet the contents were not ruined.

Maybe the delivery guy was too tired for the day?
Just wondering, how can the delivery oeople prove that the item was delivered if somebody contested that it was not?
Wad there a photo or some sory of delivery confirmation from the reciever?

In my Amazon account it said that the package was put into my mailbox. If they had not said that i would have thought the package has not been delivered yet or delivered elsewhere. I wonder that too though, if a customer says they didn't receive their package what happens? But delivery people have to log in the delivery into the system I think.

@lovebuglena in some areas here, the receiver would have to sign a delivety receipt.
But during this oandemic, the delivery guy would have to take a photo of the receiver holding the package.

I am assuming it was. Still don't get why they couldn't just leave it on my steps.

If it didn't fit in the mailbox, it should have been put on your porch.

That's what I think. And it's not like the damn mailbox was far from my house.
