Ahh springtime, not too hot not too cold, just right! And what's springtime without a garden of "flowers" to enjoy. And I have some song selections which include some fine species in their title. Here are a few honorable mentions before we solve today's blooms. Who can forget Seal's song "Kiss From A Rose," or "Edelweiss" from the Sound of Music, and finally, "Sugar Magnolia" (flower), a tune by The Grateful Dead. Now doesn't that fill your senses with the smell of spring!
So let's take a seat on our porch, relax, and enjoy this musical view from today's video "Sugar Magnolia."
Wow, that's some sugar sweet song! What a strange, strange trip it was
Ok, time to "put a spring in your step" and look over the clues to today's mystery songs and artists.
Name that tune and the artists who recorded them- Whodunnit?
(Remember words in quotations can provide hints to the music trivia answers)
1. Before the height of the British invasion when the radio was filled with easy listening love songs this singer's 1962 "flower tune" "rose" to the top of the charts. This singer became a "teen idol," and he became known as 'The Polish Prince', as his music paid tribute to his Polish heritage. The artist was almost dropped from his record label but this love tune saved his career. In the song lyrics two flowers are mentioned, the one in the title and "violets" which are "blue." One of this singer's most popular songs is "Blue Velvet" which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1963. During the Beatlemania period, when the Fab Four controlled the record charts, this artist still continued to have top ten hits. His song "Mr. Lonely" reached #1 in 1964, finding room alongside all those Beatles chart topping tunes. "Mr. Lonely," was released when the Vietnam War was escalating, and became one of this artist's signature songs and a favorite with servicemen around the world.
-Do you know the name of this 50's-60's teen idol singer and his popular flower song?
2. This #1 tune from 1968 was inspired by this artist putting together his "favorite flower and color" in a song title. These two words are used in the song's chorus "over and over." The type of flower used in the song title attracts bees. It is cultivated as a secondary product in a "type of honey." The singer's favorite color is a "rich deep red hue." The "football team in Alabama" uses this color as part of it's "nickname..." The Alabama _________tide. Joan Jett recorded this song in 1982. Many of this bands early singles like "Hanky Panky" and "Mony Mony" were labeled "bubblegum pop music," which the singer hated so much he changed his style to "psychedelic rock." This mystery song is in his later style.
-Do you recognize the name of this artist/band and their "flower-titled" song?
3. Here's another flower-titled song from 1968 which reached #3 on the Billboard charts. The "yellow cupped shaped flower" in the tunes "lyrics" is used as a "metaphor" to refer to the girl as his "sweetheart." In this song his girlfriend treats him badly "building him up" but then "putting him down" by never calling. The group is a British soul band popular from 1967-70. This group had a hit in 1967 with the tune "Baby, Now That I've Found You." The band's name is the same term used to define the "lowest weight bearing part of a building."
-Do you know the name of this multi-racial band from Britain and their "flower-titled" song?
Ok, let's show some "flower power" when solving these song and artist answers. If your stuck and need additional hints just let me know in your response. Or as The Four Tops would say in song, "Reach Out And I'll Be There."
*Feel free to share a favorite song which makes you feel it's spring. Who knows, maybe it will show up on a later quiz of mine.
Thanks for reading and responding to my music post!!! Until Next Saturday...

(WITH MY ADDED VISUALS) At the time, this show didn't rattle any of our bells. Oh, sure, it was fun to see them "on TV" ... but shit, we hadn't been used to...

1. I can almost picture the artist for that one with your mention of Blue Velvet. Means I'll know who when you mention his name. No clue about the song title. I probably know that one too.
2. Crimson and Clover. I don't know the artist. Though once you mention him, I'm sure I'll recognize the name.
3. The Foundations. Build Me Up Buttercup, Don't Break My Heart. Somewhere in there must be the title.

Not "all roses" but not bad either! Bobby did cover that song. He had another Rose song called "Roses Are Red" (my love) which was our quiz answer. #2 & #3 are "come up smelling like roses!"
Glad that clue helped Ken
Enjoy...

1. Easy one - I met him at Cain Park Theater where I was taking classes one summer. His song "Roses are Red" was very popular then; and he signed my 45. Bobby Vinton is the guy.
2. Crimson and Clover -- I should know who did it; but I can't remember.
3. "Why do you fill me up Buttercup baby just to let me down...." The Foundations
