Cruise ships starting up again

It's been over a year since cruise ships were allowed to sail. How do you feel about them starting up again? Do you think cities are better off without cruise ships? Do you think it has such a negative environmental impact? Venice stopped allowing cruise ships and were so happy with the ecological benefits, now they seem to be starting again. Should cruise ships be banned?

I don't know what you're talking about. Sometime mid 2020, some crusie lines offered cruises with half their normal capasidity so people could more effectivly socially distance. So, I don't know what you mean by "starting up again".

Here in Florida the CDC put a ban on them sailing. Only now are some companies starting up again. They have been sitting in the ports since 2020. I have a close family member who is in the cruise industry, so it's a frequent discussion.

Being a Floridian, I feel that cruise ships are a huge boon to our economy. But, the nature lover in me hates the fact that the ships cause so much pollution. I'm torn on this one, as I definitely love going on cruises, but I'm much more aware of the environmental impact these days. Even if the powers that be deem it safe to cruise again, as an individual I would be very hesitant to go on a cruise right now due to Covid. Even though people will be vaccinated, that doesn't make them 100% safe from the virus. To me, it's not worth the risk right now.

I am in favor of the cruise ship coming back obviously following all the rules that the current moment of covid 19 requests. I've worked on a cruise ship.

Ok! I've worked on cruise ships too. But I never really realized how much they impact the ecology. Grey water dumping, etc.

The problem in Venice is that the cruise ships come too near and destroy the foundation of the houses. They could anchor a bit further away and the tourists could be taken to the city by small boats. Yet, the cruise ships are not the culprits . They couldn't come so near to the town if the Venetiians didn't allow it. Yet, the Venetians are greedy. More about this here:
Let’s have a close look at the photo. You see water - or rather a part of - what? The sea, a lake, a river? In this water you see a school of fish. Although...

That is a tough call since cruise ships are wonderful for the passengers to enjoy a vacation at sea while on the other hand, I have heard the horror stories of ships breaking down in the middle of the ocean which causes heartbreak for the passengers.

That's one of the funniest comments I've read in a long time! Firstly, how many cruise ships have "broken down in the middle of the ocean" during the, say, last ten years? Secondly, I wouldn't be afraid of heartbreak if that happened but of ***drowning***!

@Deepizzaguy You made it sound as if loads of ships break down. "maybe one or two ships" isn't really much considering the many ships crossing the oceans.

@MALUSE According to the national news media maybe one or two ships have broken down at sea due to mechanical errors.

I am glad to see them able to operate again. People need to live, people need jobs. As for environmental impact, thse ships generally have far less of that than anything else going on in the city. These ships are actually a benefit.

Well it's good for people who like to travel but maybe we need more info on how bad it's environmental impact is so we can decide if cruise ships should be banned or not. I mean they can do more for the environment if that industry decides to pull themselves together. I've seen some videos where they do what they can to reduce food waste and such. Am planning on having a career at sea soon so maybe I would learn all about their crimes against the environment once I am onboard. Perhaps I can even suggest some changes if they'd accept it? Who knows. It depends if I get hired soon. I hope and pray I get a job onboard this year. But first I need money to pay for the various trainings. Moolah come to mamah.

I wish they'd at least put a partial ban on them, to reduce size and numbers. Many places the nature is better of without them. Maybe allow them for longer cruises across bigger bits of water, but not going so close into cities like Venice.

Welcome to Mylot, Enjoy! I have been on many cruises & of course there are pro's & con's as there are in many things in life. Many of the older polluting ships are currently being broken up in Turkey & India as it is too expensive to bring them up to todays higher standards. Many of the newer ships & high end cruise lines treat all their waste on board or have massive recycling plants onboard to deal with such waste. Many countries are now enforcing anti pollution legislation which bars certain ships from sailing into ports. As for the impact on places the Venetians are very greedy people & all tourists have to pay a daily tourist tax.Venice is a sinking city & l agree that these ships should not be going too near the city. I was quite shocked to see standing at the top of St. Marks tower to be confronted by the mega cruise ships at eye level. ( Italian cruise ships by the way) The cruise industry employs millions of people from all over the world some of whom are able to improve their living conditions back home. The local suppliers also benefit greatly by providing provisions & services to the ships. I am not dismissing the environmental impact but the shipping industry are constantly trying to meet stringent rules & new regulations to negate their environmental impact on the world but also they provide Billions of $$$ to local economies many of which in turn are used to improve the environment. As these mega sized ships the latest one holding 6500 passengers are like floating Vegas hotels but are much more efficient than some older ships. One could say the same about the mega sized hotels in Las Vegas. They in turn channel some of their profits into environmental projects too.

Life has to go on so it is great that cruises are back. However, I hate it that they are requiring people to get vaccinated to be able to go on a cruise. I am sure there will be people who are against the vaccine that will end up getting it just so they can go on a cruise.
