That's a hard habit to get the dogs out of. Once they're diggers, I believe they always will be.
You could always be outside with them when they're out, but that could get really annoying, especially if it's too cold or hot outside.
Good luck to you!

well i know that dogs dig. that is waht they do. but my dog use to do it all the time. then i started to give him more freedom... no leash sometime... not in a fenced yard at others. he has not dug at all! mine a golden ret. but a frined of mine has a husky and that dog will get bored and just chew on things... then outside she will dig. maybe if you go out with her for a bit and keep her mind off of it that may work. who knows tho... it is what dogs do.

Okay, this is disgusting, but it works everytime.
If there's a spot where the dogs dig repeatedly, shovel some of their poop into it. The first time they get a noseful of poop, they won't dig there anymore. After a few times of hitting poop when they dig, they'll knock it off. That's worked with every single dog I've ever trained.

Digging can be either a characteristic of your dog's breed or evidence of separation anxiety and a desire to escape.
Instructions
STEP 1: Avoid punishing your dog for digging ' this only teaches her not to dig in your presence. She may resume digging when you're not around. STEP 2: Take her on walks. Dogs often dig to expend energy, and walking is a less destructive way to accomplish this. STEP 3: Put up a fence to keep your dog out of areas ' like your well-manicured lawn ' where you don't want her to dig. STEP 4: Confine your dog in a dog run with toys, shade and water. STEP 5: Keep your dog's sleeping area shaded in hot weather, and supply a wading pool if it's hot outside. Dogs often dig in search of a cool place to lie down. STEP 6: Turn on the sprinklers or spray your dog with a hose each time she starts digging ' this may discourage her from digging if she doesn't like water sprayed on her. Tips & Warnings
Digging is often a result of boredom, so keep your dog occupied with other activities.
Give your dog her own place to dig ' a sandbox or dirt area ' and encourage digging in only that spot by hiding treats for her to find. This allows your dog to enjoy the natural behavior of digging without ruining your yard.

1. She only goes outside to "do her business" so she can't dig when I'm not around.
2. She gets tons of exercise -- we often walk her to the local dogpark and then let her race around until she wears herself out.
3. She is digging in the backyard (which is fenced in)
4. & 5. See #1
6. She looooves water!
The sandbox thing is a great idea though -- I may try that!

It depends on the type dog you have. Lab, dachshuns and beagles are natural diggers. but even those can be taught not to dig. Usually a dog is digging for something, bugs, frogs, etc. They also like to dig in the same place, some dig so they can lay on the cool ground if it is hot. I have found putting cayenne pepper in the area they dig deters them. Please don't chain them up and don't punish them. They are doing what comes natural for them. Build them a sandbox and teach them to dig in it, give them a designated place to dig. Here is a good site with some good techniques http://www.findoutaboutdogs.com/How_To_Stop_Dogs_Digging.html Good LUCK!
