"Sublet"--Movie Theatre Review

As far back as I could remember I always enjoyed going to movies mainly for the places that they would take me and even today I will sit through movies mainly for where they are taking place. Most movies--especially romantic ones---are boy meets girl (or boy), boy loses girl (or boy) and ends with boy and girl (or boy) living happily ever after. It all started with opposite sexes, of the same color, to opposite sexes of different colors and then became same sex couples with the latter only different because of the 'coming out' factor. Now instead of meeting 'cute'--maybe bumping into each other as they come around the corner--gay men couples usually meet via dating sites on the Internet. An older man with a younger man may be more startling, or disapproved of, than an older man with a younger woman but there have been so many movies with 'odd couples' that today it is just another aspect of a film that is quickly forgotten. "Sublet" is about an older man, Michael, who is a travel writer for the New York Times who has recently lost the child he and his lover/partner/husband were having and he is now in Israel to do a story about all he can discover in five days about Tel Aviv. He sublets an apartment from a film school student, Tomer, who is his complete opposite not to forget a lot younger. What makes this film different from other films I have seen in a long time is the portrait of a city I will probably never go to and/or see and through its story by Eytan Fox, the characters and actors, in particular, Michael played by John Benjamin Hickey and Tomer by Niv Nissim, not to forget the photography by Daniel Miller, brings it to life and makes me feel I have been there. "Sublet" is a 1 hour and twenty-seven-minute movie that moves quickly, holds your interest and has the added bonus of bringing a city to you that you may not have ever been to or reminds you of that city that you have visited.
