King and Queen (King) Songs: Beggar to a King (#4)

I do love doing dual countdowns like this. Currently it’s songs with “king” and “queen” in the titles. You get all kinds of weird mixes. Case in point: today’s song with “king” in the title, which is about as 180 from the “queen” song as you can get. Here’s a shocker for you. #4: Beggar to a King - The Big Bopper That’s right, folks, Jiles Perry Richardson did do things more than “Chantilly Lace” and die in a plane crash with Buddy Holly. While we think of The Big Bopper as a “novelty” act because of his one big hit, as well as others he wrote (such as George Jones’ “White Lighnin’” and Johnny Preston’s “Running Bear”), the man could really write good songs. Sadly, he’s forever known as a footnote to rock and roll tragedy. That, in itself, is a tragedy. And just to prove that I do have compassion on those who don’t like country music, I’ll point out that the version of this song I grew up with was Hank Snow’s 1962 hit rendition.
