Would you like to own a plot of land on Moon?

There was a news item that a smart man in a city called Dehradun in India has been selling plots on the moon in the pandemic, for a few thousand rupees a piece. It may seem like a strange idea today, but if many centuries ago if someone told the then king that airplanes would take over our skies, he would not have believed it. Ideally, neither the buyers nor the seller can currently own any part of Earth’s satellite. It is not allowed under the international laws. The guy is selling the plots for Rs 2,499/ (USD 33.72 approximately) per 4000 square meter. The buyer gets a certificate stating that you are the owner of 4000 square meter on the moon, with a map containing coordinates of the plot’s location. Many Indians are paying good money for “plots” of lunar real-estate, which seems absurd. However, if you dig a little you will find that he is cashing on to the human tendencies of insecurity, hope, pride and love. They buyers could boost to others that they own a plot on moon or could gift a plot to someone. Would you like to own a plot on the moon, even if it is only in papers to brag about it to others? No. Those aren't legal land sales so mean nothing. There is a guy in the US doing the same... except the guy here is also selling plots of land on Mars, Jupiter and Jupiter's moons. He's also selling naming rights to planets outside the solar system. None of them are legal.

Everyone knows that it is not legal and any such thing is not possible. The guy in India has taken the idea probably from the US guy. . You are telling that the guy is selling plots of land on Mars, Jupiter and Jupiter's moon but the fun part is people are willing to buy just for the uniqueness of idea.

@dpk262006 You may be right... I don't know. I'm afraid some people think it's possible they're buying something for their grandchildren or great grandchildren in the future.

I do not think that you cannot afford to spend just Rs.2499/- and could own a plot on Moon. . People buy plots because it a unique idea and they could brag in the society that they own a plot. It is just for fun.

@dpk262006 is there life on moon? Is there air? Is there water? Is there gravity? Is there gravitational force? Nothing is there then what's the use of buying land there. Also don't have a space craft and also don't have enough money to buy a ticket to moon so won't buy a land there

@sjvg1976 Your all questions are very logical and if you see it in practical terms, no one should buy a plot of land on moon.

It's fraud. The seller has no right to sell land that he does not own. If the seller took money for the sale of the plots, it's a crime. He could however, sell certificates of an honorary ownership of plots. Charge for the certificate, not the plot. Some people would still throw their money at him. I think what this person does is or should be, illegal.

I have already mentioned in my post that it is illegal and it is not permitted as per law. It is just a fun idea and he issues a certificate and the interesting part is people are willing to buy it. Some people buy it (they only get a certificate) to gift it to their spouse.

People always find stupid ways to spend their lots of money. I am not one of them. If I have excess money, I would rather donate it to some good cause than going for this stupidity.

Arunima - It is just an idea and people are buying a plot of land on moon, some people have gifted it to their spouses. You see it is just for fun and for boosting that I have plot of land on moon, nothing else. If you do not want to buy a plot of land it is fine, do not take the discussion too seriously. . It is a good idea to donate money for a good cause because it gives you a kind of satisfaction.

@arunima25 You see it is your choice to have a solitaire instead of a plot of land on moon. However, the plot is costing (in papers only) just Rs.2499/- and a solitaire will cost much much more than it.

@dpk262006 I wonder why people should pay for something like this. Print it on your computer on a certificate paper, you only pay the price of the paper. I never even liked to fly from one continent to another, no way that I would travel to the moon.

I will be happy to pay you Rs.10/- and to receive a Certificate from you that I own a plot on moon. .

No, I wouldn't. I would prefer to spend my money on something useful I don't think that people would be impressed if I showed them that I owned a part of the moon. They would probably consider me stupid or naive because I bought something that you can't buy or sell. It is probably safer not to brag about it

You see it is completely your choice that you want to spend money only on useful things, nothing wrong in it. You seem right that people may not feel impressed if you tell them that you own a plot of land on moon. Even if they think that you are stupid, they may feel jealous of you in heart of hearts and may think that why do not they own a plot of land on moon.
