Housework tip please - what's the best way to freshen up a smelly vacuum cleaner

I clean for a couple and their vacuum stinks really badly. Apart from putting a powder down and hoovering it up, can I put anything inside the vacuum cleaner and if so, what, plus how long will it last? Not wildly exciting but am stumped lol

I have a Kirby vacuum. The Kirby company sells a deoderizing oil that you drip onto a cotton ball. Then you throw the cotton ball in the bag before you hook it up. It really works. The only other thing I can think of is sticking a fabric softener sheet in the bag. Good luck!
