„Leftover Women“!?

I have checked my fb today and saw a few videos from other fb pages. One of the videos are from ASIAN BOSS, a cultural insight in Asia. The topic was about „ leftover women“. Have you heard about these words? Very discriminating I should say towards Chinese women. I was shocked when I have seen this video that I have to share it with you. The interview was done in Shanghai with the local people and their views about the unmarried women. „Leftover women“ are unmarried women from 30 years old and beyond. They are women who nobody wants. They are either successful or not, beautiful or not, rich or not but are still tagged with these words. Most of these women have a lot to offer but they have not found the men they could marry especially that their parents have a lot to say in their lives even if they are adult people. Men usually marry women who are in their 20s for bearing a child. For these men, women in their 30s are so old for bearing a child. Btw, Chinese unmarried men in their 40s and above are called „Golden Bachelor“. Chinese parents have a huge part in choosing their children’s wife or husband to be. They have a kind of market in Shanghai for advertising their daughters and sons future life partners. They have high standards in choosing the husbands of their daughters. The husband to be should have a house, a car and a good salary. Men are „nothing“ if they don’t have these qualifications. No wonder that many Chinese women are not married at all. Watching the interview I thought that I am lucky that I am a Filipino by birth and that Filipino children are free to choose whom they are going to love and marry. Of course parents advice their children if the woman or man is not good for them. Anyway, I have learned a lot today of some culture in other Asian countries like China and South Korea. Thank you for reading. Have a nice Monday. The photo has nothing to do with this post. It is just the landscape from where I walked last Friday for 5 kilometres.

From centuries Italians are free to choose who to marry. I feel sorry for those young Chinese women... in India women are not a lot more lucky.

@thelme55 Also some African countries consider women like goods to use and throw, horrible!

Oh yes, I've heard of this and it is so sad. Those "left over women" try to marry foreigners because they do not have the same mindset.

I found a couple of videos like that on YouTube. I'm sorry to say, that it's really insulting. In this day and age, there are people still thinking like that.

I had to almost laugh, my mother would have been classified a leftover and my father a golden bachelor, too funny. They found each other luckily.

That is very sad. These out-dated ideas take a very long time to change. We learnt a lot about the Nepalese way of choosing partners for young people while we were there. I found it very interesting.

@thelme55 The parents choose the partners and the young people are usually perfectly happy to go along with the parents' choice. They believe the parents have their best interests at heart. The young people meet beforehand several times and can pull out of the arrangement if they want to. The problems come if there are squabbles about dowries but that doesn't seem to happen in the more well-to-do families. I had always been very much against such arranged marriages but those we met who had gone down that path were very happy. They also like to marry the girls off quite young before they get too many preconceived ideas and opinions. Then they are more likely to adopt those of the husband and there is less confrontation.

Lol. I thought you are a married woman. It doesn’t matter how you are called as long as you are happy. You have a lot of advantages as not a married woman. Thank you @florelway.

From what you wrote, I see that only rich men can get married in China. If it were to be the case in India, nearly all the men in India have to remain unmarried. But it is not the case here. In India even a daily labourer who does not have a house or car or a regular job marries a woman of his economic status and carries on his life's journey. His wife also works hard to bring up their children.Work is worship.

I think „normal“ (not rich) people are marrying each other there. How would they continue their population if only the rich people can get married. I think they do the same in China. Thank you @RAOCV20.
